Cumali Varan, who killed Sibel Kavılı with a gun in Bağcılar, appeared before the judge. In his defense, Varan stated that he wanted to apply the astral travel training his girlfriend received on himself. Varan said, "There was no argument. I just said, 'Don't do things related to astral travel on me.' Because the astral travels she was doing isolated us."

On March 29, 2024, in the Bağcılar district of Istanbul, Cumali Varan, who worked as a security guard at a hospital, shot and killed his girlfriend, nurse Sibel Kavılı, who also worked at the same hospital. The trial of Varan, who is facing a life sentence, was held at the Bakırköy 4th High Criminal Court. Cumali Varan, the complainants, and the attorneys of both parties attended the hearing.

"ASTRAL TRAVELS ISOLATED US"

In his defense during the hearing, Varan claimed that he had a religious marriage (imam nikahı) with the victim Sibel Kavılı and that they had been living together for 7 years. Varan alleged that Sibel Kavılı had been practicing the training she received about astral travel on herself for the last 1.5 years and stated that he allowed it because he loved her.

Varan said, "It was our eighth anniversary on the day of the incident. I bought a flower as a surprise. I went to her. There was no argument. I just said, 'Don't do things related to astral travel on me.' Because the astral travels she was doing isolated us. I stayed at my brother's place for a week. When I went to her, she said, 'I have received new training. I want to try it on you.' I did not accept." He claimed that on the day of the incident, Kavılı hit him and insulted him, and he stated that when he entered the balcony to distance himself and then came back inside, Kavılı cursed at him.

"SHE TOLD ME 'MY ENTITIES ARE LEAVING ME BECAUSE OF YOU'"

Defendant Varan explained that he did not take a shower because the woman told him, "You are leaving me alone," and said, "We started the session. I told her I felt bad. Sibel told me, 'My entities are leaving me because of you. You are going to the skies, you are in the skies.' I said, 'Don't play with my mind.'"

"WHEN SIBEL PULLED MY ARM, THE GUN FIRED"

Describing the moment of the murder, Varan said, "I took the gun from the room to shoot myself. Sibel knew the gun was there. I pointed the gun to my head. Sibel pulled my arm, and the gun fired there. It hit her right in the chest. As she was falling, she was holding my arm, and it fired again. I laid Sibel on the bed. I cleaned the blood at the crime scene because I was afraid of Sibel. Sibel wanted to be clean."

"THEY HAD SEPARATED A WHILE AGO"

Witness Ahmet Gürbüz stated that the defendant and Sibel Kavılı had separated a while ago. Gürbüz expressed that Kavılı had told him that the defendant was bothering her, saying, "We gathered all of the defendant's belongings. I took them to her. This happened a week before the incident." The court, which decided to continue the defendant's detention, postponed the hearing to address the missing issues.
