In Bursa, dental technician Atilla Çetin (61), who killed his divorcing wife, dentist Yasemin Uludağ Çetin (52), was sentenced to life imprisonment for 'premeditated murder of a spouse and a woman'. The court panel applied 'unjust provocation reduction', reducing the sentence to 23 years, and also sentenced him to 1 year in prison and a fine of 3,000 liras for 'purchasing, carrying, or possessing unlicensed firearm ammunition'.

The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, around 12:00 in Yalman Street, Bağlarbaşı District, Nilüfer. Yasemin Uludağ Çetin, who was going home with her daughter Z.Ç. and son A.E.Ç., was attacked by her divorcing spouse, dental technician Atilla Çetin, who had been following her. Atilla Çetin shot her in the head in front of the building where they lived. The mother of two collapsed, and police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene upon notification. Injured Yasemin Uludağ Çetin was taken to Çekirge State Hospital by ambulance after initial medical intervention but could not be saved despite doctors' efforts. Following the incident, which was captured on security camera, Atilla Çetin was taken into custody and subsequently arrested by the court.

"MY FATHER TRIED TO KILL ME 1.5 YEARS AGO"

A lawsuit was filed against Atilla Çetin seeking aggravated life imprisonment for 'premeditated murder of a spouse'. The indictment included the testimony of the couple's children. The couple's daughter Z.Ç., stating that her father tried to kill her, said, "My father attacked me at home 1.5 years ago and wanted to kill me. I filed a complaint against him. He also had a restraining order after this incident. On the day of the incident, when my mother, brother, and I came to the front of our house after having coffee, my father also arrived. He parked his car in the middle of the road, shouted insults like 'You whore, you bastard' at my mother, and approached her. While trying to push him away, he took a gun from his car and shot my mother."

"HE WAS VIOLENT TOWARDS ME, MY SISTER, AND MY MOTHER"

The couple's son A.E.Ç. said, "My father was constantly violent towards me, my sister, and my mother. We reported him to the police. My mother filed for divorce. Despite this, my father continued to harass us. On the day of the incident, he killed my mother in front of my sister and me."

"MY AIM WAS TO SCARE"

During his questioning at the police station and prosecutor's office, Atilla Çetin, who claimed his divorcing wife was cheating on him with two people and said his aim was to scare, stated, "On the day of the incident, when I went to talk to her, I got angry after being subjected to her insults and shot her with the gun I had with me. My aim was not to kill or injure; it was just to scare."

"THE FAMILY COURT JUDGE'S GAME RUINED MY LIFE"

At the first hearing at the Bursa 18th Heavy Penal Court, Çetin blamed his deceased wife's family and the divorce case judge, saying, "Let them ask my neighbors, during this entire process, even though I passed by there many times, how many times have we argued, how many times have I insulted her? But only one thing happened: a game played by the judge of the Bursa 7th Family Court, who kept us waiting for 19 months. That judge, with the instructions he received, prolonged our divorce case for 19 months and ruined my life after I turned 60." The President of the Heavy Penal Court responded, "Let's not talk behind the back of the judge who is not here," showing a reaction to the defendant.

"WE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHETHER YASEMIN HANIM OR THE DEFENDANT WAS ON TRIAL"

The verdict hearing at the Bursa 18th Heavy Penal Court took place. The lawyer for Yasemin Uludağ Çetin's children, who requested no reduction in the sentence, recalled the defendant's words about the divorce case judge in the previous session, saying, "The defendant has always shown his aggressive attitude during the trial. We request that he does not receive a reduction. We couldn't understand whether Yasemin Hanım or the defendant was on trial. We have requested a SEGBIS recording from the beginning. However, not only was this request not fulfilled, but some statements were not recorded in the minutes. When we reminded the defendant of his words, he accused us of lying. We request that the defendant be punished without any good conduct reduction."

"I AM NOT SEEKING SHOWMANSHIP LIKE THE OTHER SIDE'S LAWYERS"

Repeating his previous defenses, Atilla Çetin said, "It is you and your panel who are judging me. I trust your justice. I am not seeking showmanship like the other side's lawyers. If there is justice in the country, you will implement what is necessary. I trust the court's justice. I respect the decision you will make."

CLAIMING PROVOCATION, HE REQUESTED ACQUITTAL

The defendant's lawyer, in his final defense, said, "Both our client and the other party filed for divorce. Being told that his wife committed adultery provoked our client. We request the acquittal of our client. If a penalty is to be given, we request the maximum application of unjust provocation reduction."

VERDICT REACHED

Announcing the verdict, the court president reduced the life imprisonment sentence given to Atilla Çetin for 'premeditated murder of a spouse and a woman' to 23 years by applying 'unjust provocation reduction', and also sentenced him to 1 year in prison and a fine of 3,000 liras for 'purchasing, carrying, or possessing unlicensed firearm ammunition'.
