Due to the decrease in rainfall in Istanbul in March, the lowest March rainfall in the last 39 years was recorded. Additionally, the lowest March rainfall in the last 65 years was recorded in Kırıkkale, in the last 42 years in Balıkesir, and in the last 36 years in Kocaeli and Sakarya.
The number of rainy days in the regions of Kırklareli, Çanakkale, and Balıkesir occurred in the range of 15-20 days. On the other hand, the number of rainy days in the Kırıkkale area dropped to as low as 1 day in some places.
"WE OBSERVE A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN RAINFALL ACROSS TURKEY"
Meteorology engineer Güven Özdemir stated that there has been a significant decrease in rainfall, especially in the Marmara Region of Turkey. Özdemir noted that rainfall in the Marmara Region has decreased by 59% compared to last year and by 61% compared to the long-term average, saying, "We are observing a serious decrease in rainfall across Turkey. When looking at the 39-40 year averages, this decrease is clearly visible. Unfortunately, drought is bending Turkey's back."
"LET US NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE FULLNESS OF OUR DAMS"
Özdemir emphasized that while the dam fullness rates provide temporary relief, the real danger continues, stating, "Let us not be deceived by the fullness of our dams. This year, the heavy rains affecting the Marmara and Black Sea coasts have allowed the soil to gain some moisture, but this is not enough. This is an alarm for the coming years." He noted that the average temperature increase in the world has reached 1.3 degrees, and this increase is felt even more in metropolitan areas.
