A 22-year-old drunk driver, Enis Demirkıran, who was arrested for causing the death of a mother and her daughter in a car accident after running a red light in Tekirdağ, expressed in his defense, "I am sorry for the pain I caused to the other party." The court panel decided to continue Demirkıran's detention.
On July 21, 2024, in Sultanköy Junction, located in the Marmaraereğlisi district of Tekirdağ, a car with the license plate 22 ACM 830, driven by Enis Demirkıran (22), ran a red light and collided with a car with the license plate 34 UZZ 80, driven by Refiye Erden (44). In the accident, Refiye Erden and her mother Safiye Erden (74) lost their lives, while Semra Demirok, who was in the same vehicle, along with Enis Demirkıran and Fatih Güngör, were injured.
Enis Demirkıran ALCOHOL LEVEL DETECTED The driver Enis Demirkıran, who was taken to Çorlu State Hospital, was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.60 promille during the examination. After his procedures, Enis Demirkıran was placed under house arrest after being referred to the courthouse. In the expert report prepared regarding the accident, Demirkıran was found to be primarily at fault for causing the accident by violating traffic rules, including "Drivers approaching the junction must slow down according to the conditions at the junction, be careful, and must allow vehicles with the right of way to pass first," "Failing to comply with the red light rule," and "Driving under the influence of alcohol above legal limits."
Refiye Erden (44) and her mother Safiye Erden (74) in the accident UP TO 50 YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT SOUGHT In the indictment prepared by the Tekirdağ Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a total of up to 50 years of imprisonment was requested for Enis Demirkıran for the crime of "manslaughter with possible intent," with 2 counts of 20 to 25 years each. Demirkıran was arrested during the first hearing held at the Tekirdağ 3rd High Criminal Court.
"I'M SORRY" DEFENSE In the third hearing held today, the detained defendant Enis Demirkıran and the lawyers of the parties attended. In his defense during the hearing, Demirkıran expressed regret for what had happened, stating, "I am sorry for the pain I caused to the other party."
DECISION TO CONTINUE DETENTION The hearing concluded with a decision to continue the defendant's detention, and it was postponed to await the report from the Forensic Medicine Institution and to complete the missing documents in the case.
