In the second round of Brazil's presidential election, according to unofficial results, right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, who was defeated by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, announced that he did not recognize the election results. Bolsonaro, reacting to the 2-hour extension of voting time, announced that he would apply to the judiciary for the annulment of the elections.
BOLSONARO DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE ELECTION RESULTS
After the second round of Brazil's presidential election, debates over the results began. Flavio Bolsonaro, who trailed Lula da Silva according to unofficial results, announced that he would request the annulment of the elections.
According to news in the national press, Bolsonaro cited the decision by Federal Supreme Court (STF) Judge Cristiano Zanin to extend voting time by 2 hours as justification.
"I WILL REQUEST THE ANNULMENT OF THE RESULTS"
Emphasizing that he would not recognize the election result, Bolsonaro said in his statement:
"What happened today was not normal. It was unacceptable. For the first time in history, the rules of the game were changed with a single stroke. The principle of equality among Brazilians in different states was completely violated. I will never know how many votes I could have received in states where the ballot boxes were not reopened. It is impossible to recognize the elections in this way they took place. I will request the annulment of the results."
IT EMERGED THAT HIS OWN TEAM ALSO REQUESTED THE EXTENSION
Despite objections and complaints from Bolsonaro's side, it emerged that the request to extend voting time was also submitted to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) by his own election campaign team.
It was stated that Bolsonaro's team made an official application to the TSE to extend voting hours in some municipalities in the states of Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, Sao Paulo and Santa Catarina.
THE LAST-MINUTE DECISION CAUSED CONFUSION AT THE BALLOT BOXES
The decision taken at 17:00, when voting procedures officially ended in Brazil, caused confusion at the ballot boxes.
When it was announced that voting time was extended, most ballot boxes across the country had already closed.
In response to reactions, court officials stated that the extension decision covered only polling centers that had not yet closed.
LULA'S TEAM ALSO REQUESTED THE EXTENSION
It was stated that TSE Judge Cristiano Zanin accepted the request by President Lula da Silva's election team to extend voting time by 2 hours due to restrictions in public transportation and transportation problems.
LULA RECEIVED 51.77 PERCENT OF THE VOTE
According to data with 99.89 percent of ballot boxes opened, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared victory by receiving 51.77 percent of valid votes.
Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, received 48.23 percent of the votes.
Flavio Bolsonaro announced that he did not recognize the results and would apply to the judiciary for the annulment of the elections.
