The increase in West Nile virus cases in Greece continues. With 58 new cases identified in the last week, the total number of cases has risen to 290, and the number of fatalities has increased to 24. MOST PATIENTS ARE OVER 65
According to reports in the Greek press, details regarding the health status of the 290 detected cases have been shared. Of the total cases, 199 involved severe central nervous system involvement such as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis. It was noted that 91 cases showed mild symptoms or did not experience central nervous system involvement. On the other hand, as of September 2, it was announced that all 24 patients who died were individuals over the age of 65.
VIRUS SPREAD TO 69 MUNICIPALITIES: ATTICA REGION AT RISK
In the report on the geographical distribution of the outbreak, it was stated that cases have been seen in a total of 69 municipalities across 20 regional units nationwide. It was emphasized that virus circulation, particularly in the Attica region, which includes the capital Athens, has been much more intense compared to previous years. Health officials warned that cases may emerge in new areas as well as existing ones in the coming period.
EODY CALLS FOR PERSONAL PROTECTION AND MOSQUITO CONTROL
In a statement made by the Greek National Public Health Organization (EODY), attention was drawn to the efforts being carried out to stop and contain the spread of the outbreak. The organization reported that maintaining uninterrupted epidemiological surveillance, tightening mosquito control programs, and increasing citizens' individual protection measures are of critical importance.
