The European Union has imposed a heavy fine on the popular social media platform TikTok. TikTok was fined a record 530 million euros on the grounds of espionage on behalf of China. This penalty is recorded as the highest fine ever imposed by the European Union on a social media platform.

The European Union has taken action against TikTok over allegations that it shared user information with Chinese authorities. The Irish data protection agency, acting on behalf of the Brussels administration, imposed a hefty fine of 530 million euros (600 million dollars) on the China-based popular social media platform TikTok.

APPEAL AGAINST THE DECISION

TikTok announced that it plans to appeal the 530 million euro (600 million dollar) fine imposed by the Irish data protection agency. The Chinese social media giant, which is also under scrutiny in the US, admitted to hosting European data in China, which it had previously denied during the investigation. In response, the company claimed that it has never received any requests from Chinese authorities regarding European user data.

US HAD SHUT DOWN THE POPULAR APP

Due to concerns that TikTok was sharing user data with the Chinese government, a decision was made to terminate the platform's operations in the US unless it was sold to an American company. In fact, in January, the Washington administration's restrictions on the company came into effect, and the famous video-sharing site was blocked. However, after President Donald Trump was sworn in, TikTok was reopened in the US. Recently, Donald Trump stated that the regulation regarding the separation of TikTok's US assets from China is still on the table.
