Ahmet Köse, Second President of the Chamber of Meteorological Engineers, who was a guest on Haberler.com, stated that due to the soil reaching water saturation, the risk of landslides, as well as floods and flash floods, has risen to the highest level until Sunday, and said that citizens living in the landslide area urgently need to take personal precautions.

Answering the questions of Editor-in-Chief Atty. Bedia Teymur and Melis Yaşar on Haberler.com screens, Second Chairman of the Chamber of Meteorological Engineers Ahmet Köse made striking assessments regarding the adverse weather conditions continuing across the country. Emphasizing that the soil is now saturated with water, Köse issued critical warnings for the weekend.

“ANY RAIN THAT FALLS AFTER THIS HOUR MEANS RISK”

Drawing attention to the fact that the soil has reached saturation point, Ahmet Köse said, “Until noon on Sunday, we have a risk of floods, flash floods and landslides in most of the country. Because the soil has reached saturation. Every additional rainfall after this hour means a risk of floods, flash floods and also landslides.”

“THOSE LIVING IN BASEMENT FLOORS...”

Stating that citizens living in areas that have previously experienced flood and landslide danger should take personal precautions, Köse addressed especially those residing in basement floors. Offering vital recommendations to citizens, Köse said, “Those living in basements should, if possible, temporarily go stay as guests elsewhere. When leaving buildings, they must definitely turn off the electrical switches and valves.”

“IN 24 HOURS WE RECEIVED ONE THIRD OF A YEAR'S RAINFALL”

Recalling that around 242 kilograms of rainfall per square meter was recorded in Istanbul, Köse spoke as follows: “We can think of this rainfall like this: Istanbul's annual rainfall is around 700 kilograms on average. We received one third of a year's rainfall in 24 hours. Therefore, this is an inevitable result.”

“THE INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEM HAS COLLAPSED”

Stating that the character of rainfall has changed with global warming and climate change, Köse argued that the data used in infrastructure planning is no longer sufficient. Köse said, “We generally build infrastructures according to 100-year average rainfall data. However, this system has collapsed in recent years. Because the frequency, duration and intensity of rainfall have now changed.”
