While Turkey struggles with forest fires, images of the damage caused by the fire that broke out between the Menderes and Seferihisar neighborhoods of İzmir have emerged. The fire affected the Doğankent Site, leading to the evacuation of homes. During the 16-hour fire, many households became unusable, and cooling efforts are still ongoing in the area.
As temperatures rise during the summer months, the fight against the wildfires that have started across the country continues, and the damage caused by the fire that broke out in the forest between Kuyucak in Menderes and Orhanlı in Seferihisar became apparent with the dawn.
COOLING WORKS CONTINUE IN THE AREA
The fire spread to the Doğankent Site during the night, and the summer neighborhood was evacuated as a precaution, with the electricity line cut off. Many homes became unusable. With the light of day, the damage to the houses in the neighborhood was documented. As 16 hours passed since the fire started, cooling efforts continue in the area.
"EVERYTHING HAPPENED IN HALF AN HOUR DUE TO THE WIND"
Berkan Kaya, a resident of the site who stated he was in Doğankent Site when the fire started, said, "The fire started in Orhanlı Neighborhood. It was said that the fire was coming this way. We went outside to see if there was anything we could do, and after half an hour, smoke started rising in the site. We could no longer see the site we knew by heart. Then we started evacuating people; our only goal was to get everyone out and do whatever we could. Everything happened in half an hour due to the wind. There is something we always overlook; we were deceived by the beauty of the site. We ignored the risk of the surrounding area being forested. We wasted our water, and I want to say this," he said.
"I NEVER THOUGHT THE FIRE WOULD SPREAD HERE"
Selahattin Aydın, a resident of the site who stated he was at his home in Seferihisar during the fire, said, "There is about 20 kilometers between the fire's origin and here; I have been working here for 30 years, and I worked for many years in the forestry organization, but I have never seen a fire like this. It has come this far due to the storm; even if it's a fairy tale or a story, I never thought the fire could spread this way. We had just bought this place; I have been living in Seferihisar for about 30 years," he said.
