In April, a decree issued by the Council of Ministers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with "the force of law" amended the Ministry of National Education's "Disciplinary Regulation," allowing the wearing of headscarves in high schools. The Constitutional Court ruled that the regulation was unconstitutional.

The "Disciplinary Regulation" changed by the Council of Ministers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to allow students to attend high schools wearing headscarves has been annulled by the Constitutional Court.

Upon the application of the Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers' Union (KTOEÖS), during a session held today at the TRNC Constitutional Court, it was ruled by a vote of 3 to 2 that the "Disciplinary Regulation" of the Ministry of National Education, which was amended by the decision taken by the Council of Ministers in April to allow students to receive education with headscarves, is unconstitutional.

"THE RELEVANT REGULATION MUST PASS THROUGH THE REPUBLIC ASSEMBLY"

The decision of the Constitutional Court was read by the President of the Supreme Court, Bertan Özerdağ. In the court's decision, it was stated that the relevant regulation must be passed through the Republic Assembly, referring to the decree issued by the Council of Ministers with "the power of law."

While the court's decision was being announced, citizens who supported and opposed the decision held a demonstration in front of the building, chanting slogans at each other.

HIGH SCHOOLS HAD GONE ON STRIKE

In April, with the decree issued by the Council of Ministers in the TRNC with "the power of law," the Ministry of National Education's "Disciplinary Regulation" was changed, and education with headscarves was permitted in high schools. After the decision, KTOEÖS took the process to the Constitutional Court, and the high schools where students attended classes with headscarves also went on strike.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had made statements regarding the issue at Teknofest held in Northern Cyprus. In his speech, Erdoğan reacted to the "headscarf protests" occurring in Northern Cyprus, stating, "Whoever tries to mess with our girls' headscarves will find us opposing them."
