In Syria, where efforts are being made to heal the wounds of civil war under the leadership of interim government head Ahmed al-Shara, voters are heading to the polls for parliamentary elections.
This is the first election held in the country since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, conducted under a temporary and indirect system. Voting, which started at 09:00 local time, is expected to see 6,000 electoral committee members casting their votes, with the polls closing at 17:00.
70 MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TO BE APPOINTED BY SHARA
It is anticipated that two-thirds of the 210-seat Syrian Parliament will be elected, while the remaining 70 members of parliament will be appointed by President al-Shara. Officials stated that reliable population data is unavailable due to millions of Syrians being displaced by the war, which is why this system was preferred instead of general elections.
Additionally, a previous statement by the High Committee for the Elections of the Syrian People's Assembly indicated that elections in the provinces of Suwayda, Hasakah, and Raqqa had been postponed for security reasons. The statement noted that 19 seats in parliament related to these regions would remain vacant until elections are held.
"ELECTIONS WILL ONLY BE HELD IN GOVERNMENT-CONTROLLED AREAS"
Speaking to the state news agency SANA, High Election Committee Spokesperson Nawar Najmeh stated, "Elections can only be held in areas that are completely under government control."
