The Minister of National Defense, Yaşar Güler, attended the farewell ceremony held for the soldiers who were martyred due to methane gas in Yüksekova, accompanied by the command hierarchy of the Turkish Armed Forces. After the ceremony, where 6 heroic Mehmetçiks were bid farewell on their last journey, Minister Yaşar Güler made statements to the press.
Minister Güler stated, "Yesterday, search and rescue operations were carried out by our commandos in a cave to reach the sacred remains of our heroic comrade, Infantry Lieutenant Nuri Melik Bozkurt, who was martyred on May 28, 2022, in the Pençe Kilit Operation area. During the operation, our heroic commandos were affected by methane and carbon monoxide gas. While our heroic comrades affected by the gas were immediately dispatched to the hospital, a comprehensive operation was also initiated in coordination with AFAD and the Turkish Coal Enterprises rescue teams for our comrades who remained in the cave."

Recalling that 12 heroic Mehmetçiks were martyred as a result of the unfortunate incident, Minister Güler said, "The great courage and sacrifice shown in the noble duty of reaching the sacred remains of our comrade who was martyred earlier constitutes one of the unparalleled examples of camaraderie in the Turkish army that will go down in history. Our pain is great and our feelings are inexpressible. Even though our hearts are broken, we know that our dear martyrs will always have a place in the most distinguished corner of our glorious history as a symbol of our nation's freedom and independence. We will always cherish the precious memories of our martyrs with gratitude and will remember their sacrifices with appreciation."
Minister Güler stated that an investigation has been initiated regarding the incident, saying, "This event, which has plunged us into deep and painful sorrow, will be examined in detail with the administrative investigation we have initiated. On this occasion, I once again wish God's mercy upon our dear martyrs, and I extend my condolences and patience to their grieving families, the Turkish Armed Forces, and our noble nation. May the souls of our martyrs be blessed, and their resting places be paradise. The Turkish Armed Forces will continue its activities with the same determination and resolve," he said.
