WHAT HAPPENED?
The Special Operations Team of the State National Security Committee conducted an operation at Atambayev's house in Koy-Tash village on August 7-8, 2019, to summon him as a "witness" in the ongoing investigation regarding the illegal release of mafia leader Aziz Batukayev in 2013.
A scuffle broke out between security forces and Atambayev's supporters, who had been guarding his house for 1.5 months, with claims that 6 security personnel were taken hostage, and one special operations officer was killed during the operation. Police searching Atambayev's house, who was detained, seized a large number of weapons and ammunition. Later, all bank accounts, properties, securities, and shares belonging to banks and other companies identified as belonging to Atambayev and his family were blocked.
