The House of Representatives, the lower house of Japan's parliament, was dissolved in order to hold early general elections on February 8.
The lower house of the Japanese parliament, the House of Representatives, has been reported to be dissolved in order to hold early general elections.
THE GOVERNMENT HAS FALLEN IN JAPAN
According to Kyodo's report, the House of Representatives dissolved itself in its first session of the new legislative term held this morning.
The dissolution of the parliament, which normally would have continued its term until 2028, initiates an urgent early general election process.
The campaign process for the general elections to be held on February 8 will begin on January 27.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Prime Minister Takaiichi Sanae announced earlier this week that the House of Representatives would be dissolved on January 23 for the early general elections planned to be held.
Takaiichi, who came to power after a leadership change within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), stated that she saw the early election as necessary to gain public confidence for her premiership.
Takaiichi, who took office as Japan's first female prime minister in October 2025, expressed that with this early election decision, she would "risk her position as prime minister and seek the voters' decision on whether to remain in this position."
