In an attack on a police station in the Balçova district of İzmir, 2 police officers were martyred, and 3 people, including 2 police officers, were injured. The 16-year-old attacker’s grandfather, speaking with tears in his eyes, began his words by saying, "I am finished." The grandfather stated, "He didn’t say anything when he left the house. We definitely did not expect something like this. He was calm and used to come and go like that. He always brought home certificates of achievement from school."

The armed attack that took place yesterday morning in the Balçova district of İzmir has shocked the entire Turkey. A 16-year-old high school student, E.B., who concealed his face with a ski mask, arrived at the Salih İşgören Police Station in Çetin Emeç Neighborhood and opened fire on the guard booth with a shotgun around 09:00. In the attack, police officer Hasan Akın and 1st Class Security Director, Police Chief Inspector Muhsin Aydemir were killed. Police officers Ömer Amilağ and Murat Dağlı, along with a civilian, were injured. It was reported that the condition of the injured Ömer Amilağ is serious.

THE 16-YEAR-OLD ATTACKER WAS CAPTURED INJURED

İzmir Governor Süleyman Elban announced that the attack was carried out by a 3rd-year high school student and that the young man had no criminal record. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç stated that an investigation was immediately initiated by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and 2 deputy chief prosecutors and 6 prosecutors were assigned to the case.

FATHER'S FIRST STATEMENT: HE RADICALIZED RECENTLY

In his first statement, father N.B. stated that his son had radicalized recently, spent a lot of time in front of the computer and phone, and watched violent videos. Mother A.B. also said that her son had started to increasingly radicalize and tell family members that they were "infidels."

During the incident, the neighborhood residents recounted that they pounced on the attacker when the gun in his hand fell silent and handed him over to the police. It was determined that the shotgun belonged to his father and was licensed, and that the attacker had a large number of bullets and a knife with him.

As part of the work carried out by the Provincial Police Department's Counter-Terrorism Branch, the number of arrests has reached 27.

In the investigation, the attacker E.B., who was captured injured, his mother A.B., his father N.B., two friends A.K. and D.Ş., as well as K.N. (32) of Iranian nationality in Istanbul, B.Y. and C.T. in Ankara, and M.A. in Şanlıurfa were arrested.
