Excavation work to retrieve the bodies of thousands of people executed by the terrorist organization ISIS between 2014 and 2017 began years later at the Hasfa Sinkhole.
REMAINS OF BOUND VICTIMS HAVE BEEN REACHED In the initial excavation work launched with the participation of Mosul Governor Abdulkadir al-Dahil and Mosul Appeals Court President Rait al-Muslih, the remains of victims with their eyes bound were reached.
"THE TERRORIST ORGANIZATION EXECUTED AT LEAST 20,000 PEOPLE" Governor al-Dahil, at a press conference, described Hasfa as "the bleeding wound of Mosul," stating that the terrorist organization executed at least 20,000 people from different religions and ethnic groups. Al-Dahil mentioned that 2,000 people were killed by the organization in just one day, among whom 600 were from the Wadi Hacer region. The governor also stated that after the first phase conducted in cooperation with the local administration, the Iraqi Forensic Medicine Institute, the Iraqi Martyrs Foundation, and the Mass Graves Department, Mosul University would undertake the necessary studies for biological examination, and it was reported that a monument would be built in memory of the victims in a designated area.
Mosul Governor Abdulkadir al-Dahil AT LEAST 3,000 VICTIMS ARE THOUGHT TO BE FOUND IN HASFA Located 20 kilometers south of Mosul and considered one of the largest mass graves in the world, it is estimated that at least 3,000 victims are found in Hasfa Sinkhole, but the actual number could be two to three times higher.
"THE WORK IS EXPECTED TO LAST ABOUT A YEAR" In a statement regarding Hasfa last March, Governor al-Dahil emphasized that they were acting in coordination with the Mosul Appeals Court and that justice must be provided to the families of the deceased. He stated, "It is not reasonable to wait this long. We must give the families of the deceased the right to learn the fate of their loved ones." Al-Dahil noted that not only Hasfa Sinkhole but also other mass graves in Tal Afar and Sinjar would be opened, and the work would take about a year, stating, "This work is an important step to learn the fate of thousands of people killed by the terrorist organization ISIS."
ISIS'S DEATH PIT Located about 20 kilometers south of Mosul, Hasfa Sinkhole was used by ISIS, which controlled Mosul between June 2014 and July 2017, to dispose of the bodies of thousands of people. Some Iraqi sources indicate that some of the killed were executed next to the sinkhole and fell into the pit, while others were thrown into the pit alive. It is also estimated that underground waters may have swept away many bodies in the sinkhole.
After ISIS was expelled from the city, Iraqi teams tried for months to reach the sinkhole but were unable to enter the area due to mines laid around the terrain.
