Speaking before the trial of 17-year-old Atlas Çağlayan, who was stabbed to death in Istanbul's Güngören district, mother Gülhan Ünlü demanded that the defendants receive the harshest punishment. Opposing any sentence reduction, Ünlü said, "We want a precedent decision. We don't want murderers on the streets," and called for changes in the execution regulations.
Before the first hearing of the trial regarding the death of 17-year-old Atlas Çağlayan, who was stabbed and killed in a fight in Istanbul's Güngören district, his mother Gülhan Ünlü made statements in front of the Bakırköy Courthouse.
A large number of citizens also gathered in front of the courthouse to support the family before the hearing to be held at the Bakırköy 2nd Juvenile Heavy Penal Court.
"WE WANT A PRECEDENT DECISION"
Mother Gülhan Ünlü, who demands the harshest penalty for those held responsible for her son's death, also requested legal action against other suspects.
Ünlü said, "We want to protect all our children. We demand that the law be passed as soon as possible and changes be made to the Execution Law. We want a precedent decision. We do not want any reductions to be applied."
"WE DON'T WANT MURDERERS ON THE STREETS"
Reacting to the defendants being considered as children due to their age, Ünlü stated, "We don't want them to be called children just because they are 15 years old. They weren't children when committing the crime, so why are they children when being tried? They are not children; we want them to be tried as adults."
The grieving mother also expressed her pain, saying, "We can't meet with our children because... We go and look at our children's graves. We don't want murderers on the streets."
SUPPORT GATHERED IN FRONT OF THE COURTHOUSE
Citizens gathered in front of the courthouse to support mother Gülhan Ünlü chanted slogans such as "Justice for Atlas Çağlayan."
The first hearing of the trial regarding the murder of Atlas Çağlayan is expected to be held today.
