The flood disaster caused by days of heavy rain in Central European countries continues to claim lives. According to police sources, a firefighter in Austria lost his life during flood rescue operations, while one person in Poland and five people in Romania lost their lives due to the flood. Since Thursday, record-breaking rainfall caused by a low-pressure system coming from northern Italy has affected many Central European countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania. Slovakia and Hungary are also expected to be affected by the flood. Four people were reported missing after being swept away by floodwaters in the Czech Republic. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the first death due to the flood in the Klodzko region on the Polish-Czech border on Sunday morning. A large amount of water flooded the streets as a result of the collapse of a dam located above the town of Stronie Slaskie in Lower Silesia, Poland. The Polish fire department shared images of people in distress in the floodwaters on social media. The southwest of the country has been the most affected region, with approximately 1,600 people evacuated in the town of Klodzko. Polish authorities have called on the military to support firefighters who have been insufficient in rescue operations. On Saturday, Polish authorities closed the Golkowice border crossing with the Czech Republic due to a river overflowing. This also affected the train line connecting the towns of Prudnik and Nysa. While the flood threat continues in the region, warnings and rescue efforts by authorities are ongoing. According to weather forecasts, the rainfall is expected to continue, which means the risk of flooding will persist in the coming days.
