Former US President and Republican Party candidate for the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump, claimed that Chinese car manufacturers are setting up factories in Mexico and stated that if elected, he would impose a 200% customs duty on all vehicles produced in these factories and sent to the US. Speaking in Michigan, Trump evaluated China's impact on the US automotive industry and economy, stating, "If I don't win the elections, our automotive industry will not exist in 2 or 3 years." Trump, who claimed that Chinese companies producing cars are building "giant factories" in Mexico, stated that if he wins the elections, he will impose a 200% customs duty on vehicles produced in these factories and imported to the US.
Trump argued that the customs duties he will impose will make "Chinese cars produced in Mexico" unsellable in the US and will encourage foreign car manufacturers to establish factories in the US.
TRUMP'S WARNING OF "ECONOMIC DEVASTATION"In a speech he made in Ohio in March, former US President addressed Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying, "You will not employ Americans in the giant car manufacturing facilities you are building in Mexico, and you will not sell those cars to us." Trump, who claimed that the country would enter an economic crisis if he is not elected, said, "There will be devastation in the country, and this is the mildest form of it. They will not sell those cars. They are building giant factories."
