Hacettepe University introduced 55 Automatic External Defibrillator devices to be used in cases of sudden cardiac arrest and heart attacks. The devices will be installed as part of the university's 'Safe Campus Network' project, and it was also learned that the devices include instructions in Turkish suitable for public use.

At Hacettepe University (HÜ), 55 Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) devices have been put into use for first aid intervention in cases of sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack.

A notable innovation has been implemented at Hacettepe University. According to a statement from the Higher Education Council (YÖK), the 55 Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) devices introduced during a launch event held at the university during the Emergency Health Services Week from December 1-7 were put into service as part of the university's "Safe Campus Network" project.

The promotional meeting for the AED devices was attended by ASELSAN Deputy General Managers Taha Yücel and Alaattin Dökmen, ASELSAN Research Collaborations and Technology Transfer Manager Yusuf Erdem, President of the Turkish Health Institutes Prof. Dr. Ümit Kervan, as well as university administrators and medical faculty students.

AN ESSENTIAL FOR HEART PATIENTS

Commonly known as "automatic shock devices," AEDs can be used for first aid intervention in cases of sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack due to their portable size and the inclusion of Turkish commands that can be used by individuals outside the healthcare field. It was noted that 20 devices were installed at the university's Sıhhiye Campus and 35 devices at the Beytepe Campus as part of the project.

"THE DEVICE GIVES ALL INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE MOMENT YOU TURN IT ON"

In a statement, HÜ Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgical Medical Sciences Chief Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Erbil mentioned that they aimed to create a model safe campus network project.

Erbil expressed that AED devices should be located in areas with high human density and noted the following about the device's usage: "From the moment you turn on the device, it gives all the instructions itself. Pads come out, it says, 'Attach the pads.' You attach the pads. It says, 'Attach the cable.' You attach the cable. When you have prepared these, a warning comes saying, 'Step back, rhythm is being analyzed.' When you hear this command, you move away from the patient. Then, if it recommends a shock, it gives the command, 'Everyone step back,' and says, 'Press the shock button.' It's that easy."

Intern medical student Dr. Busenur Gündüz stated, "A safer environment has been created for us in terms of being able to help our friends in case of need. Being able to intervene before reaching the hospital is an important step that can strengthen basic life support."
