A critical day is approaching for millions of civil servants and retirees. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) will announce the inflation figures for May tomorrow. This data is of great importance in determining the rate of salary increases for civil servants and retirees in the first half of the year.
FIVE-MONTH INCREASE RATE CLARIFYING
The inflation rates announced since the beginning of the year continue to shape the increase rate for SGK and Bağ-Kur retirees. A monthly inflation increase of 2% is expected to be added to the inflation data of 5.03% in January, 2.27% in February, 2.46% in March, and 3% in April. In this case, the total increase over five months will reach 15.62%.
However, in order to determine the exact increase rate, the data for June also needs to be announced. Thus, the total increase rate to be reflected in salaries in July will be clarified after the June data.
INFLATION DIFFERENCE FOR CIVIL SERVANTS AND RETIRED CIVIL SERVANTS
A different increase mechanism is in place for civil servants and retired civil servants. According to the current collective agreement, an increase of 6% is foreseen for the first 6 months of 2025, and 5% for the second 6 months. However, if inflation exceeds these rates, the difference will also be reflected as an additional increase in salaries.
If the inflation for May is 2%, the cumulative inflation rate for civil servants and retired civil servants in the first five months of the year will reach 14.53%. In this case, civil servants will also be entitled to the inflation difference increase, just like SGK and Bağ-Kur retirees.
CLARIFICATION IN JULY
As a result, the increase rate to be applied to the salaries of all retirees and civil servants in July will be clarified after the announcement of the inflation data for May and June. The data that TÜİK will announce tomorrow will be one of the most critical steps in this process.
