The decision calling on the Israeli government to annex the occupied West Bank was approved by 71 votes in the 120-seat parliament. The resolution claimed that the West Bank is "the historical, cultural, and spiritual homeland of the Jewish people and an inseparable part of the land of Israel." The decision only calls on the government to take steps in this direction and does not implement the annexation of the West Bank.

The Israeli Parliament (Knesset) voted today on a resolution calling on the government to annex the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, which it occupied in 1967.

"THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PALESTINIAN STATE IN THE WEST BANK IS AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT TO ISRAEL"

The resolution accepted in the parliament claims that the West Bank is "the historical, cultural, and spiritual homeland of the Jewish people and an inseparable part of Israeli territory." The text of the resolution also argues against the establishment of a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank, stating that it would pose "an existential threat to the state of Israel and its citizens."

CALL TO "ACT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"

With this resolution passed in the Israeli Parliament, it was argued that the "idea of a Palestinian state has been removed from the agenda." The Israeli Parliament also called on the government to "act as soon as possible to apply Israeli sovereignty" over the illegal Jewish settlements built on Palestinian lands in the West Bank.

Similarly, the Israeli Parliament had previously accepted a resolution in February 2024, with 99 votes, and in July 2024, with 68 votes, objecting to "the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state" in response to steps taken by some countries to recognize the Palestinian state.

ISRAEL'S DESIRE TO ANNEX PALESTINIAN LAND: THE OCCUPIED WEST BANK

Israel's presence in the West Bank, which it occupied in 1967, is considered an occupation under international law. According to resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council, Israel's annexation of these territories obtained through war is rejected.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice due to ongoing attacks in the Gaza Strip, while also increasing its steps to seize Palestinian lands in the occupied West Bank. According to a report by the Israeli civil society organization Peace Now, Israel's land confiscation in the occupied West Bank exceeded the total for 2024 in the first three months of 2025.

Under international law, it is considered illegal for the occupying Israel to transfer its citizens to the occupied territories or forcibly displace the Palestinians living there. In the occupied West Bank, 451,000 Israelis and approximately 230,000 in East Jerusalem are seizing Palestinian lands. According to international law, these confiscations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are considered illegal. Right-wing parties and politicians in Israel frequently advocate for the superiority of Jews in the occupied Palestinian territories, arguing that Israel should seize more land and annex the West Bank.

On the other hand, Israelis living in illegal settlements are subject to Israeli laws. In contrast, approximately 4 million Palestinians living in the West Bank live under the occupation of the Israeli army and are subjected to Israeli military rule. The Israeli army's checkpoints, roadblocks, and raids on Palestinian towns in the occupied West Bank make life unbearable for Palestinians. Additionally, attacks by Israelis seizing Palestinian lands are another form of violence that Palestinians are subjected to.
