On November 12, 2023, in Sultangazi, Tuncay Sağ went to the house of his ex-wife Pınar Bektaş. After a dispute between the couple escalated, Tuncay Sağ shot and injured his ex-wife Pınar Bektaş with the gun he had with him. When the gun malfunctioned, he killed Bektaş by cutting her throat with a knife he took from the kitchen. Tuncay Sağ, who was detained by the police, confessed to committing the murder in his statement at the police station.

HE SOUGHT REFUGE IN THE EXCUSE OF INFIDELITY

During the first hearing of the case held at the Istanbul Courthouse Heavy Penal Court, Tuncay Sağ, who was defending himself, claimed that his ex-wife had cheated on him and that he committed the murder in a fit of rage. In the hearing held yesterday, the family of the deceased Pınar Bektaş and the lawyers of both parties were present, while the detained defendant Tuncay Sağ participated in the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from the prison where he was held.

"I DON'T EVEN WANT TO CALL HIM DAD"

The hearing began with the statement of the couple's daughter C.S., who was 9 years old at the time of the incident, taken in the presence of a psychologist. Later, the couple's eldest daughter Filiz Sağ was heard as a witness. In her statement, Filiz Sağ said, "I don't even want to call that man dad. But he never even hit us. However, what he did to my mother was already enough for us. In fact, I witnessed him beating my mother on the ground one day and threatening her with a knife held to her throat. I am here as the daughter of the defendant and as the mother of my little sister. All I really want is for my father to never get out of prison."

"HE BROUGHT THE KNIFE FROM OUTSIDE"

Pınar Bektaş's sister Müjde Nar, who testified as a witness, stated, "My sister was subjected to violence and insults for years. When Pınar was beaten a few times, she came to our house. Pınar worked until late at night just to earn a little more money. She would come home exhausted and still get beaten. She was a quiet, introverted, and calm person. She wouldn't bother anyone. She never harmed anyone. Even when Pınar got pregnant, she knew that the defendant would accuse her of 'the child is not mine.' For this reason, she was so scared that she didn't even tell anyone she was pregnant for 6 months. One day while I was sitting at home, she called me. She said she was going to the courthouse for the divorce case. I asked her what was happening. She told me, 'I can't take it anymore, I can't endure it any longer.' Pınar and the children started staying with us. Even when the doorbell rang at our house, the children would run to the back room in fear, thinking their father had come. On the day of the murder, Pınar and I had gone out. At that time, the defendant called and said to Pınar, 'Where are you? I will bring your daughter.' The defendant had gone home and also brought the knife from outside. That knife was not in Pınar's house; it was not her knife. The murder was planned, as even this shows."

HE CLAIMED HE NEVER HIT HIS WIFE

In his defense, the detained defendant Tuncay Sağ said, "My daughter is lying from start to finish. I loved my wife and my children. I never used violence against either my wife or my children. If you don't believe me, you can ask my neighbors in the neighborhood. My wife had an affair. How can a person hide from her husband that she is pregnant? All the witnesses are lying from start to finish. I regret what I did."

THE HEARING WAS ADJOURNED

The court panel decided to continue Tuncay Sağ's detention in order for the prosecutor to prepare the opinion on the merits of the case and adjourned the hearing to a later date.

FROM THE INDICTMENT

In the indictment prepared regarding the incident, it was stated that the suspect Tuncay Sağ left his daughter C.S. in front of the house of the victim Pınar Bektaş on the day of the incident and then went to his own house, retrieved the gun he used in the incident, and returned to Pınar Bektaş's house. It was noted that a dispute arose between the parties in Bektaş's house and that Tuncay Sağ shot Pınar Bektaş once before the gun malfunctioned. The indictment emphasized that Sağ killed Pınar Bektaş by cutting her throat with a knife found in the kitchen. In the prosecutor's opinion in the indictment, it was evaluated that Sağ's taking a gun with him before going to his ex-wife Pınar Bektaş's house indicated that the murder was premeditated, and that cutting Bektaş's throat with a knife indicated that the murder was committed with monstrous feelings. In the indictment, it was requested that the defendant Tuncay Sağ be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'premeditated and intentional murder against an ex-wife with monstrous feelings' and to imprisonment of 1 to 3 years for the crime of 'carrying and possessing an unlicensed firearm.'
