Atatürk Airport National Garden is expected to provide a breath of fresh air to the residents of Istanbul and to take on the role of the city's "green corridor" when completed. The ongoing works in the national garden are changing the appearance of the airport with green areas. The area, covered in greenery with tree and landscaping arrangements, was captured from the air.
145 THOUSAND 300 TREES WILL BE PLANTED
There are dozens of tennis and basketball courts on the runways. A total of 145,300 trees will be planted, including 350-year-old olive trees and 50-60 year-old linden and plane trees. With the use of coniferous and broadleaf trees together, the national garden will remain green throughout the four seasons.
IT WILL BE THE 5TH LARGEST CITY PARK IN THE WORLD
The national garden, which will be the fifth largest city park in the world and the largest in Turkey, will cover an area of approximately 2 million square meters when completed. With nearly 70,000 square meters of indoor sections and social facilities, the garden will feature an artificial stream called "Ab-ı Hayat Suyu," approximately 2.5 kilometers long, with viewing terraces, picnic areas, and resting places along the stream banks.
“IT WILL BE A DISASTER SHELTER AREA”
There will also be 2.5 kilometers of bike and walking paths. Additionally, the national garden will include playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball and volleyball fields, skate parks, exhibition halls in social facilities, a soup kitchen, libraries, and national reading houses.
Atatürk Airport National Garden will also be used as a disaster and earthquake shelter area for Istanbul. The garden will have the capacity to accommodate 40,000 tents and create an emergency shelter area for 165,000 people.
