An 8-centimeter nail that penetrated the brain of a 7-year-old girl in India was successfully removed by doctors. The nail, which pierced the girl's neck and chin after she fell while playing, reached her brain. A tomography scan showed that the nail passed very close to vital blood vessels.
In an extraordinary operation that took place in India, doctors successfully removed an 8-centimeter nail that had penetrated the brain of a 7-year-old girl.
The little girl fell while playing, and a thin construction nail on the ground pierced her neck and chin, reaching her brain. The horrific incident occurred on May 15 in the village of Nawajpur, Uttar Pradesh.
A tomography scan showed that the nail entered through the lower jaw and progressed to the skull, passing very close to vital vessels. The surgery was performed the next day (May 16) by Dr. Vaibhav Jaiswal and Dr. Sameer Mishra at the Trauma Center of King George Medical University in Lucknow.
Due to swelling, infection, and brain-related risks, the little girl was placed on a ventilator and closely monitored in intensive care for 10 days.
When she was transferred to the regular ward on May 29, she was fully conscious, responsive, and showed no signs of serious neurological damage. Doctors say the girl can lead a completely normal life.
In May 2021, a similarly bizarre accident occurred in Italy. A 58-year-old gardener had a 2.5-centimeter nail shot into his eye while working with a lawnmower.
The nail penetrated deeply into his eyelid, completely closing his eye. After the incident, the man was immediately taken to a hospital in Verona. Doctors carefully removed the nail, saving his eye.
Intensive antibiotic treatment was administered to prevent infection. A month later, when the dressings were removed, the man began to see again. This unfortunate accident was miraculously survived without leaving permanent damage.
