A horrific murder case occurred in Brazil. Eliara Paz Nardes, a 33-year-old woman living in Guarapuava, Paraná state, lived with the lifeless bodies of her two children for two weeks after killing them. The mother first suffocated her 3-year-old son Joaquim with a pillow, then gave her 10-year-old daughter Alice a sedative before hanging her. The police were called to the home after neighbors complained about a foul smell coming from the apartment. The children's bodies were found in bed, with a horror movie playing on the television in front of them. Police spokesperson Ana Hass stated, "The children appeared to be sleeping in bed, but their bodies were severely decomposed." In her statement, the mother said she could not provide for her children, who had different fathers, either financially or emotionally, and that she had planned to kill them and then herself, but was unable to commit suicide. The court sentenced the mother, who killed her defenseless two children and hid their bodies, to 64 years in prison. The judges emphasized that the sentence should serve as a precedent due to the children's inability to defend themselves because of their young age.
