On the evening of October 13, at Antalya Airport, a newborn baby was found in a toilet by a cleaning staff in the disabled restroom. Upon notification, police teams arrived at the scene and examined the camera footage, determining that the baby had been abandoned 12 minutes prior by Ekaterina Burnazkina (18), a Russian national. It was established that Burnazkina went to the passport counters with her mother, Elena Burnazkina, immediately after giving birth and completed the exit procedures from the country.
THEY WERE DETAINED AT THE AIRPORT
Ekaterina Burnazkina and her mother, who were waiting at the airport to fly to Moscow, were detained by the Antalya Police Department Airport Branch teams. The newborn baby was taken to the hospital after the initial intervention by health teams. Ekaterina Burnazkina was also taken to a different hospital for treatment.
THEY WERE ARRESTED
After their procedures at the police station, grandmother Elena Burnazkina was sent to court and arrested. After her treatment at the hospital, Ekaterina Burnazkina and her mother were arrested by the duty magistrate for the crime of 'attempted murder of a close relative.'
REQUESTS FOR RELEASE WERE DENIED
At the first hearing, the lawyers of the defendant Ekaterina Burnazkina requested her release, arguing that their client experienced a cryptic pregnancy and was unaware of her pregnancy. However, the court rejected the request for release, while the grandmother was released to be tried without detention.
15 YEARS SENTENCE
In the second hearing held today, the court sentenced Ekaterina Burnazkina to 15 years in prison for the crime of attempted murder of a close relative. Her mother, Elena Burnazkina, was acquitted.
"WE WILL APPEAL"
Lawyer Beyzanur Polat stated, "Today, a decision was made that was different from what we expected. While we were waiting for Ekaterina Burnazkina to be released and for a conviction for abandonment, unfortunately, she was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted murder of a close relative. This situation surprised us greatly. We are really very shocked right now because it is generally seen that in different Supreme Court decisions regarding the same incident, a conviction for abandonment is given. Additionally, as we claimed, different rulings were given in all cases of cryptic pregnancy. Ekaterina is currently very unhappy and does not know what to do. We spoke with her and asked her to be a little more composed. We will appeal, and I hope we will get the decision we want in the appeal."
"THE SENTENCE WAS VERY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT WE EXPECTED"
Lawyer Ayşegül Kübra Polat stated, "The decision of our case has been made. An acquittal was given for Ekaterina's mother, Elena Burnazkina. However, this acquittal did not make us happy because the sentence given to Ekaterina was very different from what we expected. Our legal struggle will continue," she said.
It was learned that the defendant's lawyers would initiate the appeal process following the court's decision.
