The National Intelligence Organization (MIT) published an intelligence report regarding the period when Bolshevik politician Leon Trotsky lived in exile on Büyükada, Istanbul, between 1929 and 1933.
The MIT official website has added a new intelligence report to the "documents" section under the "Special Collection" tab.
The report is an intelligence document signed by Istanbul Regional Chief Aziz Hüdai Bey, detailing how the Bolshevik politician Lev Trotsky was monitored by the Soviet Union Intelligence during his exile in Büyükada, Istanbul, between 1929 and 1933, and how this situation was reported to the National Security Service (MAH).
THEY MONITORED STEP BY STEP The report dated January 16, 1932, reveals that Trotsky was monitored step by step, with the following statements included: "Our Armenian translator ... has started to work to improve his position against us. He has come into contact with Davranof, who is serving the duty of Serkis and is mentioned in our reports as a G.P.U. agent. Davranof's first task was to propose, 'We want to closely follow Trotsky. Who is coming to him, where is he going, who is he meeting, what kind of work is he mostly engaged in at home, and with whom is he communicating?'
In accordance with our instructions, our agent has accepted this service. Davranof has asked for the names of those assigned to monitor and guard Trotsky and which of them has been obtained. Initially, our agent did not provide an answer, claiming that this question was against procedure, but in accordance with our instructions, he accepted this as well. We will show Davranof a name and a means. They will certainly try to investigate this means or completely eliminate our agent to obtain the means. In this way, it will be possible to recognize some of Davranof's men and understand what they intend to do."
"THE MONEY AND DIRECTIVES HE WILL PROVIDE WILL BE A NEW NETWORK DISCOVERY FOR US" The report also included the words spoken by Davranof. Accordingly, the MAH personnel stated the following regarding the matter:
"While Trotsky was on the island, there was also a police officer named Salih Efendi among the guards. However, he did not come to Kadıköy with Trotsky. He came with a man he said would come from England. His name is Osias Rosenzweig. Additionally, a Frenchman named Raymond Mouliniere also came, and both of them went to Trotsky's house. The first one is English by birth but German by descent.
He claims to be a music teacher. The second one is French and speaks excellent Turkish and Greek. The reasons for their arrival and why they stayed at Trotsky's house have not yet been understood. Through our agent, we will provide some information about Trotsky to Davranof. The money and directives he will provide will be essential for discovering a new network for us. I submit this to you, sir."
