A 29-year-old Russian woman, Ekaterina Burnazkina, who was found to have left her newborn baby in a toilet at Antalya Airport, has been requested to be punished for "attempted qualified murder." The defendant, Burnazkina, who does not accept the prosecution's indictment and wants her baby, which is under state protection, stated, "I do not accept this crime. I want to take my daughter."
In the disabled toilet at Antalya Airport, a newborn baby was found in the toilet bowl by a cleaning staff on October 13, 2024. During the investigation, it was determined that the baby was abandoned by Russian citizen Ekaterina Burnazkina just 12 minutes before being found. It was revealed that Ekaterina Burnazkina, who abandoned the baby, quickly went to the passport counters with her mother Elena Burnazkina to complete the exit procedures from the country.
2 SUSPECTS ARRESTED AND DETAINED
The mother and daughter, who were preparing to go to Moscow, were caught by the Antalya Police Department Airport Branch teams. The newborn baby was also transferred to the hospital after the intervention of health teams. The baby's mother was taken to another hospital for treatment. After the procedures at the police station, Elena Burnazkina was sent to prison after being arrested. Ekaterina Burnazkina was also arrested for 'Attempted murder' after her treatment was completed. Elena Burnazkina was released on judicial control conditions at the first hearing.
REPEATED HER PREVIOUS STATEMENTS
The trial of the Russian mother and daughter continued at the Antalya 3rd Heavy Penal Court. Ekaterina Burnazkina, who previously stated that she realized she was giving birth after a warning from the police, repeated her statements. Ekaterina Burnazkina noted that she applied to a health clinic in Alanya a few days before the birth due to suspected food poisoning.
"SHE LOOKED OVERWEIGHT, I DIDN'T REALIZE SHE WAS PREGNANT"
A doctor, A.Y., who examined the defendant testifying in court, said, "I had a private practice in Alanya. Ekaterina came to us on October 12. She came to the clinic with complaints of nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. A blood test was done. Food poisoning was diagnosed. We do not perform pregnancy tests, and there is no ultrasound device. The defendant told me she was not pregnant. In the tests we conducted, the infection value was high. Since we did not suspect pregnancy, we did not perform any tests. Her discomfort may have masked the pregnancy as it included the same symptoms. Even though I performed a manual examination, I did not feel any movement in the abdomen. We felt it as intestinal movement. She looked overweight; I did not realize she was pregnant," he said.
PROSECUTOR: SHE COMMITTED THE ACT KNOWINGLY AND WILLINGLY
The prosecutor stated that the newborn baby was left naked, without any precautions to prevent it from being affected by the cold and the water in the toilet, with its feet in the water, and expressed that it was determined that the defendant, who left the newborn baby with a very weak defense system in the toilet with the worst hygiene conditions, committed the act knowingly and willingly. The prosecution, which presented the indictment, requested the acquittal of the defendant Elena Burnazkina and the punishment of the defendant Ekaterina Burnazkina for 'Attempted qualified murder' after giving birth to her baby in the toilet and leaving it there. Ekaterina Burnazkina, who did not accept the indictment and wanted her baby, who was taken under state protection, said, "I do not accept this crime. I want to take my daughter," she said.
