The unsolved murder of Gültekin Yıldırım, who was stabbed to death in Bayrampaşa, Istanbul in 2014, was solved thanks to advances in forensic techniques. The suspect M.Ö., whose DNA matched after re-examination of biological evidence at the crime scene, was arrested in Datça, Muğla.
The suspect of a murder committed in Istanbul 12 years ago was identified and taken into custody thanks to renewed criminal examinations and DNA matching on evidence collected at the crime scene.
CASE BROUGHT DOWN FROM THE SHELF AFTER 12 YEARS
Teams from the Istanbul Police Department's Public Order Branch, as part of their efforts to solve unsolved murder cases, revisited the investigation file regarding the stabbing death of Gültekin Yıldırım (55) in Bayrampaşa on June 24, 2014.
SUSPECT IDENTIFIED
In detailed examinations of the file, biological evidence obtained from the crime scene was re-evaluated using advanced criminal techniques. As a result of DNA comparisons, it was determined that the samples from the scene belonged to suspect M.Ö. (58).
Deepening the investigation, teams also found that the suspect was in the area where the murder occurred on the date of the incident.
SUSPECT CAUGHT 12 YEARS LATER
Acting on the findings, police teams launched an operation and apprehended M.Ö. in a rural area of Datça district, Muğla.
The suspect's procedures at the police station continue.
