On June 13, a dispute broke out between Ozan Kaya, who lives in the rural Sınırteke neighborhood of Aydın's İncirliova district, and his aunt's husband Şenol Göktaş, with whom he went to the cornfield.
HE KILLED HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW WITH A SCREWDRIVER The argument arose over the house belonging to Kaya's mother, Fadime Ş., which was built in the name of her sister Ayşe Göktaş because she took care of her after her husband's death, and quickly escalated into a fight. During the fight, Ozan Kaya injured Göktaş with a screwdriver and fled. Upon notification, gendarmerie and medical teams were dispatched to the address. Medical teams confirmed that Şenol Göktaş had lost his life. After the crime scene investigation, Göktaş's lifeless body was taken to the morgue of Aydın Adnan Menderes Hospital for autopsy. After the incident, Kaya, who fled, surrendered to the gendarmerie. Ozan Kaya was arrested by the court to which he was referred after his procedures.
HE APPEARED IN COURT FOR THE FIRST TIME After the investigation, Ozan Kaya, who was charged with 'premeditated murder', appeared in court for the first time at the Aydın 3rd High Criminal Court.
"I AM JUSTIFIED IN KILLING. I HAD A HONOR CASE, THAT'S WHY I KILLED" During the hearing, detained defendant Ozan Kaya, his mother Fadime Ş., the wife of the deceased Şenol Göktaş, Ayşe Göktaş, and the lawyers of both parties attended. First, the defendant Kaya was heard. Ozan Kaya stated in his testimony that Şenol Göktaş was his aunt's husband and said, "This life has hurt me a lot. I have two sentences to say. Because my memory is strong, I have always been labeled as crazy. I withdrew to my corner and watched people. I didn't say what I knew for years. I am justified in killing. I had an honor case, that's why I killed. Şenol had a relationship with my mother. I was very young. I saw the relationship between my mother and Şenol 17 years ago. Since that day, I haven't told anyone about this relationship. At one point, I used drugs, so they see me as a stoner, a crazy person. Yes, I used drugs, but then I repented. My mind is clear. I used drugs and worked as a mechanic, but I never put on a wrong part," he said.
"HE IMPLIED THAT HE WAS THE FATHER OF MY BROTHER" Repeating that the reason for the murder was an honor issue, Kaya said, "A week before the incident, when I went to Şenol's house to kill him, he asked me, implying my brother, 'Has he grown up?' He implied that he was the father of my brother. I told him, 'Either you kill me, or I kill you.' I was offended by his implication that he was my brother's father. The day before the incident, I sharpened the screwdriver at my workplace. I went to the field around 3:30 AM. The water taps were open. I knew he would come to turn off the water in the field. He came with a tractor in the early morning. We faced each other. He pushed me with his hand. I said, 'I already know everything.' This crime was committed 17 years ago. I could have shot him in the head, but the crime is on both sides. But I was really offended by the last thing he said. I said, 'I knew what you did.' I stabbed him in the stomach 4-5 times with the screwdriver. At that moment, he tried to throw dirt in my eyes. At that moment, someone who heard our voices came to us. I said, 'I have a problem.' I waited by his head. Blood came from his eyes. I ran away through the fields. I threw the screwdriver into a well. I went towards the İncirliova Industrial Zone. I washed my hands and face at the mosque there. When I saw the gendarmerie car, I surrendered," he stated.
"MY REASON FOR KILLING IS NOT MATERIAL REASONS" Stating that the reason for the murder was not material reasons, Ozan Kaya said, "We built the house. At the time of building the house, they borrowed money from Şenol. He built the house in my aunt's name. I am not in a property lawsuit. The property belongs to God. I was going to stuff the money we borrowed into his pocket when I killed him. However, out of respect for the dead, I did not do it. I did it because of his relationship with my mother. Not because of the house, I didn't tell anyone so that my aunt's marriage wouldn't be ruined," he said.
"MY BROTHER-IN-LAW WAS LIKE A FATHER TO ME" Defendant Kaya's mother, Fadime Ş., was also heard as a witness during the hearing. Fadime Ş. stated that she had no problem with her sister Ayşe and her brother-in-law Şenol Göktaş, saying, "My brother-in-law was like a father to me. My husband died, I was left helpless. They supported me. Because they took care of me for years, I wanted the house that belongs to me to be built in my sister's name," she said. Ayşe Göktaş also stated in her testimony that she had no problems with her sister Fadime Ş.
IT WILL BE CHECKED WHETHER HIS MENTAL HEALTH IS IN ORDER After taking the statements of the parties, the court decided to obtain a report from the Forensic Medicine Institution to determine whether the defendant Ozan Kaya's mental health is in order and to continue his detention, and postponed the hearing.
