Acquitted in Mansion Case in 2019
Ebru Gündeş Sarraf, who was tried with her husband Rıza Sarraf for allegedly making renovations contrary to the Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Law at their mansions in Beykoz Kanlıca, had her case separated from the others. Ebru Gündeş Sarraf and construction engineer Hakkı Süha Gökdemir were tried with a request for up to three years in prison.
In the hearing at Beykoz 1st Criminal Court of First Instance, defendant Ebru Gündeş Sarraf did not attend, while the other defendant Hakkı Süha Gökdemir was present.
When asked for his final words, defendant Gökdemir said, "I only obtained the permits for simple renovation work related to the structure. After that, my duty ended. I have no knowledge of the work done beyond that. I request my acquittal."
Defendant Ebru Gündeş Sarraf's lawyer Begüm Can Gürel argued that her client had a busy concert schedule outside the city during the renovation period, stating, "My client had no orders or instructions regarding the renovations and repairs in the buildings. The only reason one of the parcels is registered in my client's name is that at that time, my client could not take out 2 loans from the bank in the name of her husband Rıza Sarraf. Therefore, one of the loans was taken out in my client's name, and immediately after the loan was paid off, the parcel was transferred to Rıza Sarraf. My client only saw this place on the day it was purchased and moved in. We request a decision for her acquittal."
The court decided to acquit defendant Ebru Gündeş Sarraf on the grounds that the elements of the crime of "violating the Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Law No. 2863" were not present.
The court sentenced the other defendant Hakkı Süha Gökdemir to 1 year and 8 months in prison and a fine of 80 lira for the same crime, ruling that the announcement of the judgment regarding this sentence be postponed.
