With the sudden drop in temperatures, snowfall began in Istanbul and Edirne. In Istanbul, Sultangazi, Beylikdüzü, Büyükçekmece, Bağcılar, and Hadımköy woke up to sleet. In Edirne, the heavy rain that had been effective since last night turned into snowfall in the morning hours.
The General Directorate of Meteorology announced that rainfall will be seen in many regions as rain/showers, and in Thrace and high areas as mixed rain and snow. In Edirne, the downpour turned into snow in the morning hours. AKOM reported that with the wind shifting to the north in Istanbul, temperatures could drop to around 3°C, and there may be mixed rain and snow transitions in higher areas. Following this warning, the first snow transitions began.
SNOW HAS STARTED IN ISTANBUL
After the temperatures dropped, wet snow began to fall in certain areas of Istanbul. Büyükçekmece and Hadımköy woke up to wet snow. While snowfall on the Hadımköy road occasionally intensified, snow is also affecting places in Beylikdüzü, Sultangazi, and Bağcılar.
SNOWFALL HAS STARTED IN EDIRNE
The downpour that has been effective since last night in Edirne turned into snowfall in the morning hours. The rainfall that continued throughout the night turned to snow as the air temperature dropped to 1 degree below zero. Snow is expected to continue intermittently until the afternoon hours.
METEOROLOGY ANNOUNCED AREAS EXPECTING SNOW
According to the warning from the General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM), it is predicted that rainfall will generally be rain and showers, and in the southern and western coasts of the country, thunderstorms with showers will be effective. The statement noted that mixed rain and snow are expected in the north and east of Eastern Anatolia, as well as in Thrace over time, the inner parts of the Western Black Sea, the north of Central Anatolia, and the Taurus region.
AKOM: TEMPERATURES WILL DROP BY 3 DEGREES, SNOW TRANSITIONS MAY OCCUR IN HIGHER AREAS
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) issued a warning for mixed rain and snow in Istanbul. The statement from AKOM included the following expressions:
"In the coming hours, with the strengthening of the wind from the northern directions (Karayel), it is predicted that temperatures will rapidly decrease to around 3°C across the province and occasionally drop below, along with intermittent rain and mixed rain and snow transitions in higher regions."
