Following the summer break, the 2026-2027 judicial year begins today. In Ankara, significant cases such as those involving Ayhan Bora Kaplan, FETÖ, Aleyna Çakır, Hablemitoğlu, and municipal corruption will be heard. Additionally, indictments are expected to be prepared in investigations concerning bribery, corruption, and criminal organizations.
The judicial recess, meaning "collective leave use" in the judiciary, which began on July 20, has ended, and the 2026-2027 judicial year begins today.
During the judicial recess that began on July 20 with the circular of the General Secretariat of the Council of Judges and Prosecutors, duty courts in courthouses handled cases involving detainees and those of an urgent nature. Other cases were postponed until the new judicial year.
The high judicial bodies, the Council of State and the Court of Cassation, also had duty panels during this period. The Constitutional Court, however, was not included in the judicial recess.
The new judicial year will begin with a ceremony to be held tomorrow at the Ismail Rustu Cirit Conference Hall at the Court of Cassation.
Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Court of Cassation President Omer Kerkez, and Union of Turkish Bar Associations President Erinc Sagkan will also deliver speeches at the program.
IMPORTANT CASES IN ANKARA
With the start of the new judicial year, trials deemed significant by the public will continue in the capital.
In this context, on September 3, the trial of 76 defendants in the case related to the Ayhan Bora Kaplan criminal organization will resume following the appellate court's reversal decision.
On September 17, the trial of 9 defendants in the case regarding the Ankara structure of Maydonoz Doner businesses, to which the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (SDIF) was appointed as trustee for allegedly financing the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETO), and on September 22, the hearing of the case against defendant Umitcan Uygun, tried for "encouraging suicide, reinforcing the decision to commit suicide," and "inflicting torture" regarding the death of Sema Esen, known publicly as "Aleyna Cakir," will be held.
On September 30, the trial of 4 defendants in the case opened on charges of "causing death through intentional injury" regarding the death of police officer Melih Okan Keskin in a fight at a vehicle inspection station will continue.
On October 14, the trial of 10 defendants regarding the murder of Ankara University faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Necip Hablemitoglu in front of his home in Ankara on December 18, 2002, and on October 16, the trial of 14 defendants regarding the concert expenditures of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) for the 2021-2024 period will continue.
PREPARATION OF INDICTMENTS EXPECTED
Additionally, in the "bribery" investigation initiated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against suspects, including Cankaya Mayor Huseyin Can Guner, 27 suspects had been arrested.
Within the scope of the investigation conducted regarding the deaths resulting from the crash of the helicopter carrying the period's Founding Chairman of the Great Unity Party (BBP), Muhsin Yazicioglu, and those with him, 19 suspects had been arrested on July 17.
Within the scope of the "corruption" investigation against Etimesgut Municipality, including Mayor Erdal Besikcioglu, an investigation had been initiated against 55 suspects, 40 of whom were arrested.
Meanwhile, within the scope of the "Alihan Kuris criminal organization for profit" investigation, 81 of the 124 people against whom legal proceedings were initiated had been arrested.
Numerous investigations into new-generation criminal organizations and an inquiry had been initiated against former Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ibrahim Melih Gokcek regarding allegations of "transferring unregistered money to companies abroad."
In the new judicial year, it is expected that indictments for these investigations conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office will be prepared and trials of the suspects will begin.
