French President Macron has appointed François Bayrou as the new Prime Minister. Macron had stated that he would not resign after the fall of Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government and that he would appoint a new prime minister to form a government.

The French Presidency announced that Emmanuel Macron appointed François Bayrou as Prime Minister after long consultations to find a successor to Michel Barnier, who was overthrown by deputies last week.

"THE MANDATE TO FORM A GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO BAYROU"

According to a press release from Élysée, "The President has appointed Mr. François Bayrou as Prime Minister and has given him the task of forming a government."

MACRON SAID "I WILL NOT RESIGN"

Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government was overthrown last week. After the fall of the government, Macron stated that he "would not resign and would appoint a new prime minister to form a government."

WHO IS FRANCOIS BAYROU?

François Bayrou was born on May 25, 1951, in France. He is a French politician. He served as Minister of National Education from 1993 to 1997. He was the president of the Union pour la Démocratie Française (UDF - Union for French Democracy) party until 2007.

Following the 6.84% vote in the 2002 French presidential elections, he emerged as the third candidate in the first round of the 2007 presidential elections with 18.57% of the vote. After this success, he left the UDF in May 2007 and founded a new party called the Democratic Movement. In the 2012 French presidential elections, he was eliminated in the first round with 9.13% of the vote, finishing fifth. He was elected mayor of Pau in the 2014 municipal elections. He served as Minister of Justice in the 1st Édouard Philippe Government.
