Selçuk Tengioğlu, who carried out a punch attack on CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, stated in his testimony at the police station that he receives a pension from the state. Tengioğlu said, "This incident is something I did on my own. I did not receive money from anyone, nor did I receive any instructions. After the ceremony held at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) for the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and DEM Party Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who lost his life due to multiple organ failure, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel was attacked with a punch. The attacker, Selçuk Tengioğlu (66), was taken into custody. Following the incident, the suspect was taken to the Beyoğlu Şehit Haşim Usta Police Center, where his interrogation is ongoing at the Public Order Branch Directorate.
NEW STATEMENT OF THE PERSON WHO ATTACKED ÖZEL
Tengioğlu's new statement at the police has emerged. According to the news on Ekol TV, Tengioğlu stated that he supports himself with old-age pension and social assistance.
HE HAD 380 THOUSAND LIRAS IN HIS BANK ACCOUNT
Tengioğlu, who was staying at a boarding house in Beyoğlu, mentioned that he was released from prison in 2020 and worked seasonally in places like laundries and hotels. He stated that he had been unemployed for a while and was wandering around Taksim Square looking for a job on the day of the attack. The amount of money in the attacker's bank account drew attention. Tengioğlu revealed that he had 380 thousand liras in the bank.
HE RECEIVES OLD-AGE PENSION FROM THE STATE
Selçuk Tengioğlu, who stated that he did not receive money from anyone in exchange for the attack, said: "No, nobody gave me money. The incident is something I did on my own. I did not receive money from anyone, nor did I receive any instructions. Besides that, after I was released from prison, I have approximately 380,000 liras in the bank that I have gradually saved for the purpose of saving. This money is in a time deposit." Furthermore, Selçuk Tengioğlu mentioned in his statement that he receives an old-age pension from the state.
HE SPENT 16 YEARS IN PRISON AND RECEIVED PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENT
It has been learned that Selçuk Tengioğlu, whose interrogation continues at the Homicide Bureau of the Public Order Branch Directorate and for whom an additional day of supervision was granted, stated during his police interrogation that he did not plan the incident and decided to do it spontaneously. As a result of the police investigation, it was determined that Selçuk Tengioğlu had spent 16 years in prison for killing his two children in the past and had received psychological treatment in Adana for a while.
HE WORKED AS A PAINTER, CARPENTER, AND DISHWASHER
It was determined that the suspect had previously worked in jobs such as painting and carpentry, and recently worked as a dishwasher in Alanya. In his statement, the suspect mentioned that if this incident had not occurred due to the opening of the season, he would have gone to Alanya to work soon.
HE HAD BREAKFAST AND THEN WENT TO AKM
It was learned that after having breakfast at the apart hotel where he stayed in the morning, the suspect came to Taksim Square, where AKM is located, to attend the funeral of Sırrı Süreyya Önder, whom he sympathized with.

The suspect, who stated that he never entered AKM on the day of the incident and was constantly outside, noted that he realized Özgür Özel had come very close to him all of a sudden, saying, "Spontaneously, my right hand went up and I hit him. I had not planned this action until that moment. It came to my mind at that moment, and I did it."
WHAT HAPPENED?
After the memorial ceremony held for the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and DEM Party Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Özel, who was leaving AKM, was punched by the approaching attacker. CHP Chairman Özel was escorted by bodyguards and left the area under security measures, while the suspect, who was taken into custody by police teams, was identified as Selçuk Tengioğlu (66).
CUSTODY PERIOD EXTENDED BY 1 DAY
It was stated that the suspect, for whom an additional day of supervision was granted by the prosecutor's office, is being interrogated continuously, and efforts are ongoing to uncover all the facts related to the incident.
THE ATTACKER TURNED OUT TO BE A CHILD KILLER
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office reported that Selçuk Tengioğlu, 66, who physically attacked CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, has a criminal record for killing his two children, B.T. and M.T., in Hatay in 2004 and injuring two others. In a statement from the Ministry of Interior, it was announced that the attacker, who also has a record for theft and threats and received a life sentence, was released on conditional parole in 2020. The release of the child killer caused public outrage.
