The son of retired Major General Ethem Büyükışık, Dorukhan Büyükışık, was found dead on May 13, 2018, at a construction site near his home. While the incident was officially recorded as suicide, the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office reopened the case, and a lawsuit was filed at the Izmir 21st Criminal Court of First Instance against 8 police officers involved in the case—Commissioner Atakan Kaçar (44), Commissioner Deniz A. (36), Police Officer Duygu Ö. (35), Police Officer Fikret S., Police Officer Halil A. (55), Assistant Commissioner Hüseyin Vurucu (49), Narlıdere Police Station Chief İsmail Köksal (59), and Police Officer Musa E. (55)—seeking up to 1 year in prison on charges of misconduct.

TWO CASES CONSOLIDATED

As the investigation continued, an indictment was also prepared against security guards H.K (69), H.A. (77), T.Ç. (41), worker B.Ç. (47), and security guard A.G. (77) from a nearby area, seeking life imprisonment on charges of premeditated murder. The indictment stated that findings suggested the death may have occurred after the victim was struck in the back with a hard and blunt object, and the body was then moved to the described location. The indictment was accepted by the Izmir 21st Heavy Penal Court. While both cases were ongoing, the files were consolidated. The trial of 13 unarrested defendants continues at the Izmir 21st Heavy Penal Court.

DETENTION ORDER FOR 26 SUSPECTS

Another development occurred regarding Büyükışık's death. Coordinated by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a detention order was issued for 26 suspects. Teams from the Izmir Provincial Gendarmerie Command's TEM Branch Directorate, assigned by the Terrorism and Organized Crimes Investigation Bureau, launched simultaneous operations across 9 provinces centered on Izmir. Those subject to the detention order included construction company owners Mehmet Münir T. and Mehmet Taylan T., then-Narlıdere District Police Chief İsmail Y., then-Narlıdere Police Station Chief İsmail K., Crime Scene Investigation Bureau Chief Atakan K., Group Chief Commissioner Hüseyin V., police officers, and workers.

23 SUSPECTS DETAINED

In operations conducted in Istanbul, Kütahya, Aydın, Samsun, Bursa, Tunceli, Manisa, Karabük, and Izmir, 22 suspects were taken into custody. With the apprehension of one more person, the number of detainees rose to 23. Digital materials were seized during searches at the suspects' addresses. Efforts continue to capture 3 fugitive suspects determined to be abroad.

GUARDS ARRESTED

Tayfun Çakmakçı, Hüseyin Kaya, Hulusi Aras, Ali Gülbaşı, who were learned to be guards at the construction site where the incident occurred, and Bilal Çelik, an excavator operator, were arrested on charges of premeditated murder after being referred to the courthouse following their statements at the Izmir Provincial Gendarmerie Command's TEM Branch Directorate. The remaining 18 suspects, whose court proceedings continue, were referred to the duty Criminal Judgeship with a request for arrest.

STATEMENT FROM THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

In a statement made by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office on the matter, it was stated: "As a result of the operation carried out within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, 5 of the total 23 suspects taken into custody have been arrested by the court they were brought before. As for the 18 suspects in custody, they have been referred to the duty Criminal Judgeship at the request of the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for their arrest."
