INCIDENT The Böcek family, who came to Istanbul from Germany for a holiday, fell ill at the hotel where they were staying in Fatih. Initially, food poisoning was suspected, possibly from kumpir, mussels, kokoreç, or other foods they had eaten in Ortaköy. After treatment, the family returned to the hotel but fell ill again at night and were taken to the hospital; 6-year-old Kadir Muhammet and 3-year-old Masal died the same day, while mother Çiğdem and father Servet Böcek passed away in the following days. In the later stages of the investigation, security camera footage and forensic reports were added to the case file. Examinations highlighted the moments when father Servet Böcek tried to open the hotel room door to save his ailing family, and samples taken from the hotel revealed residues of phosphine gas used in pest control. Forensic medicine determined that the deaths were not due to food poisoning but chemical poisoning from the pesticide applied at the hotel.
