Cavit Uzuncaoğlu, a 54-year-old man who killed his 76-year-old mother Nuriye Uzuncaoğlu, an Alzheimer’s patient, in Istanbul, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional murder of a direct ascendant" in the trial against him. In his defense at the court, the defendant stated, "I did not do such a thing."

The incident occurred in Fatih, Istanbul, on January 27, 2023. 76-year-old Alzheimer patient Nuriye Uzuncaoğlu was found dead in her home. It was claimed that Nuriye Uzuncaoğlu, who moved in with her 54-year-old son Cavit Uzuncaoğlu after her husband passed away, was assaulted by her son.

"AM I GOING TO CLEAN YOUR MESS?"

It was alleged that Uzuncaoğlu used phrases like "Am I going to clean your mess?" and "My father died because of you" towards her mother. The lifeless body of the Alzheimer patient was found in the house where she stayed with her son.

ACCUSATION: MISTREATMENT OF ANCESTORS

After the lifeless body of the elderly woman was found, her son Cavit Uzuncaoğlu was detained and arrested, and he was charged with 'intentional murder of an ancestor' and 'mistreatment of an ancestor'. During the hearing held at the 19th Heavy Criminal Court in the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan, the defendant Cavit Uzuncaoğlu was brought from prison, while the complainant Zafer Uzuncaoğlu and the lawyers of the parties were present in the courtroom.

KILLED BY STRIKING WITH A BLUNT OBJECT

During the hearing, the prosecutor, who presented the opinion on the merits of the case, stated that although a public case was opened against the defendant for continuously assaulting and mistreating his mother, the defendant should be punished according to the heaviest legal article attributed to his actions, and it was understood that the defendant killed his ancestor, his mother, by striking her with an ungraspable blunt object, constituting the crime of 'intentional murder of an ancestor or descendant, spouse, or sibling.'

PROSECUTOR REQUESTED "LIFE IMPRISONMENT"

In his opinion, the prosecutor stated that the crime attributed to the defendant is among the catalog crimes, and there is strong suspicion of the crime committed according to the file, requesting that the defendant be punished with aggravated life imprisonment and that the detention status be continued.

"I DID NOT DO SUCH A THING"

The detained defendant Cavit Uzuncaoğlu made a defense against the opinion on the merits. In his defense, the defendant said, "I repeat my previous defenses, I did not do such a thing."

LIFE IMPRISONMENT SENTENCE
