The protests that began with Ekrem İmamoğlu's detention on March 19, accelerated by his arrest and removal from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) presidency, continue.
THE SPEAKER AT SARAÇHANE HAS BEEN ARRESTED
Among the 206 suspects detained in the protests in Istanbul on charges of 'violating the law on meetings and demonstrations', 22 have been arrested. Among those arrested is Selinay Uzuntel, a student at Istanbul University and a member of the Labor Party's Central Executive Committee, who spoke to the crowd gathered in front of the IMM headquarters in Saraçhane at the invitation of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel.
“LET'S STOP LIFE TOGETHER” SHE SAID
In her speech in Saraçhane, Uzuntel stated: "Today, we call out to all universities from here. Let's turn our campuses into areas of resistance. Let’s show the will to grow the academic boycott with the components of the university from all over the country. We did not come here easily. We broke down the barricades to get here. We also showed the will to walk to Taksim, but they have been banning Taksim for years. If they are banning Taksim for us, then just like we go out to the streets that are deemed impassable all over the country, and just like we break down the so-called unbreakable barricades, we will turn everywhere into a Taksim area. One last call to those who give life, to workers, to laborers, and to all our people. As youth, we broke through and opened the way. Now it is time to collectively reproduce life, unite, and grow this struggle. Let’s reiterate the decision we made today. We are stopping life. We also call out to all our people. Come, let’s stop life together. There is a new life we can take from this order. Let’s roll up our sleeves together to establish a humane living order.
