The Russian soldier blew up his unit's base before fleeing to Ukraine. The footage shows a first-person view (FPV) drone pilot known only as "Silver" destroying the camp before switching sides. The clip shows officers cleaning their weapons and talking before going to bed. Then, a massive fire breaks out in the basement dormitory where about 15 people were at the time. According to reports, the explosion at the Storm-Z unit severely injured the battalion commander. Storm-Z units are typically made up of former prisoners and mercenaries. Silver's attack and defection were the result of months of careful planning with the help of the Free Russia Legion (FRL). After leaving the unit's base, the FPV drone pilot laid infantry mines on the road outside and followed a predetermined route to reach the front lines of Ukraine. During a press conference in Kiev on Wednesday, Silver said he was disappointed after witnessing the atrocities committed by his unit. He added that he enlisted to "defend my homeland," not to "die for Putin." A commander with the FRL, codenamed "Caesar," told The Telegraph that this defection showed how "intelligent, brave individuals" can overthrow the Putin regime. He also added that the drone pilot will soon join the front lines and fight against Putin's forces. A spokesperson from the Ukrainian military intelligence directorate said that "Silver" provided "valuable intelligence" about Russian war plans and unit locations.
