An explosion occurred in an unmanned maritime vehicle (UMV) in the morning hours at Romania's Constanta Port on the Black Sea coast.
In a statement by the Romanian Ministry of Defense, it was noted that no casualties occurred in the explosion, emphasizing that the vehicle in question did not belong to the Romanian Armed Forces. Officials assessed that the UMV could be one of the vehicles used in the Russia-Ukraine War.
AREA EVACUATED
Following the explosion, security measures were increased around the port, and images shared on social media showed thick smoke rising from the scene.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan announced that he was informed about the incident while traveling to the European Union-Western Balkans Summit. Dan stated that the area had been evacuated and that the priority was to protect human life.
"SECOND SECURITY INCIDENT THIS WEEK"
President Dan expressed that investigations are ongoing into how the UMV reached the port and potential risks, recalling that a naval mine had also been detected in the same region earlier this week.
Dan stated that these events are direct consequences of the Russia-Ukraine War and said that Romania, as a NATO country bordering the Black Sea, will take all necessary security measures.
