Transit ship passages in the Istanbul Strait have been temporarily halted since the morning due to the passage of the floating natural gas production platform "Osman Gazi."
According to information obtained from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the floating natural gas production platform named Osman Gazi, which is of strategic importance within the scope of energy logistics, has suspended ship traffic in the Istanbul Strait in both directions as of 08:00 due to its passage through the Bosphorus.
As part of the measures taken to ensure maritime safety and the safe passage of the platform, no ship movements are allowed during the Bosphorus crossing, while the teams of the General Directorate of Coastal Safety are escorting the platform.
It is expected that ship traffic will be reopened after the completion of the crossing.
WILL ANCHOR AT FILYOS PORT AFTER PASSING THROUGH THE STRAIT
Turkey's first floating natural gas production platform (FPU) Osman Gazi set sail towards Filyos Port by passing through the Bosphorus on the anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul. The platform has a maximum natural gas processing capacity of 10.5 million cubic meters and a maximum gas transfer capacity of 10 million cubic meters. The platform, which is 298.5 meters long, 56 meters wide, and 29.5 meters deep, has a personnel capacity of 140 people.
GAS TRANSMISSION LINE IS 161 KILOMETERS LONG
The main gas transmission line from the platform to the shore will be 161 kilometers long. The natural gas processed on the platform will be delivered to the national grid in a ready-to-use state via this line.
WILL BE AT FILYOS PORT ON JUNE 1
The Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform was taken into dry dock for renovation activities at a shipyard in Çanakkale on September 26, 2024. The crossing of the Istanbul Strait is expected to take approximately 11 hours, and the platform is planned to dock at Filyos Port on June 1.
NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION WILL DOUBLE
The floating production platform, which will start operating in mid-2026, will double the existing natural gas production in the Black Sea to 20 million cubic meters per day. Thus, the natural gas needs of approximately 8 million households in Turkey will be met from the Black Sea.
The platform will operate at the designated location for 20 years.
