In the case regarding the death of 24-year-old Sedef Güler, whose lifeless body was found in the sea wrapped in a carpet with her hands and feet bound in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, the trial of three defendants, two of whom are in custody, continued. The hearing was postponed to address deficiencies, while one of the defendants, Yavuz Güngör, stated, "I threw Sedef into the sea to avoid going back to prison."
On June 7, 2024, a woman's body was found wrapped in a carpet, with her hands and feet bound, and weighted down, thrown into the sea at Mimar Sinan Beach in the Büyükçekmece district of Istanbul. The police investigation revealed that the deceased woman was 24-year-old Sedef Güler.
2 ARRESTED, TRIAL OF 3 DEFENDANTS CONTINUED The prepared indictment includes three defendants, one of whom is at large. The trial of the arrested Fırat Baykara and Yavuz Güngör continued. During the third hearing held at the Bakırköy 4th High Criminal Court, the detained defendant Yavuz Güngör appeared before the judge for the first time. Yasemin Minguzzi, the mother of Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi, Fatma Karay, the mother of Aydın Karay, and Zuhal Akman, the mother of Ata Emre Akman, also came to support the hearing.
"I HAD NO IDEA Sedef WAS DEAD UNTIL I GOT HOME" Detained defendant Fırat Baykara stated in his defense: "The contract for the house where Sedef died was in my name. It is in my name because Yavuz was wanted. We have known each other for 20-25 years. We had a falling out for a while, but then we met again. One day he called me and asked for my help in renting a house. He gave me some money, and I went and rented the house. A month later, this incident happened. I did not know the victim. I had not been in the country for eight years. There was no reason connecting me to Sedef, not even a grain of rice. I was not there on the day of the incident. The day after the incident, I went home. When I first called, he said he was at home with his girlfriend, and they were drinking. He said his girlfriend had fallen ill. I had no idea Sedef was dead until I got home. I went home around 12:30-1:00 PM. Initially, I did not go to them. I went to the living room so it wouldn't be rude. Five minutes later, Yavuz called me to the room. He said, 'Come and check.' I checked his pulse. I thought I might not have gotten it right, so I listened to his breath. It never occurred to me that he was dead. His legs were stiff. At that moment, I realized and let go. I said, 'Bro, I think he's dead.' He said, 'Don't be ridiculous, how could he be dead?'
"HE SAID HE THREW SOMETHING INTO THE COLA" I asked him what happened. I sat down and begged, 'Please open your eyes.' I didn't even hear Sedef's voice. I asked Yavuz. He explained the situation. I asked, 'Why didn't you call 112 when she fell ill?' He said Sedef had taken drugs. He said he threw something into the cola. I said, 'Let's call the police,' but he refused. He did not allow me to call an ambulance or the police. I sat down and started smoking. I went home but couldn't stay, so I left the house. I went in front of the Vatan Police Station. But I couldn't go inside.
"WE RECONNOITERED WHERE TO THROW THE BODY" Yavuz told me that he would call me as soon as he got the car the next day. The next day we met. He had gotten the car. He called me around 11:30-12:00. We met and did a location reconnaissance. He said, 'We will leave it here.' I said, 'Bro, how will that work?' The rest is known. We first reconnoitered where to throw the body, then we bought chains together from the hardware store. I waited for Yavuz for a while. It got dark. Then we went home together.
"THE BODY DID NOT SINK" Defendant Baykara stated, "We wrapped the body in chains. Then we wrapped it in a carpet. That happened spontaneously. There was a suitcase, and we thought we could put it in there. However, the body was swollen, so we wrapped it in a carpet. I only thought it would be thrown into the sea. We put the body through the middle door of the car. I did what I did out of fear. We took the body and left it at the place where the lake meets the sea. We took it with Yavuz's vehicle. We left it at night. After leaving the body, he looked for 30 seconds and said, 'This isn't sinking.' I said, 'How would I know, bro?' Then he looked again. After throwing the body, we went home. While we were cleaning up the evidence, he said to me, 'Stop, leave everything, the body didn't sink.' I did a good deed, and this is what happened to me. I feel pressured regarding this incident. I have become an enemy. Yavuz told me not to hide my phone and to throw it away. I hid it under some greenery. I didn't do anything. I did a good deed, and this is what happened to me. I wasn't myself; how was I supposed to express myself to the police?"
"WHEN SHE CAME, SHE WAS ALREADY DRUNK, HER HEAD WAS IN ANOTHER WORLD" The defense of detained defendant Yavuz Güngör is as follows: "We met Sevda on the internet, then her sister Sedef was brought. Then we drank alcohol, and this is how we met Sedef. We had known each other for 4-5 months, and I was providing her with financial assistance. I was helping with her needs. On the day of the incident, when Sedef came, she wanted to meet me; she arrived around 11 PM, but Sedef still hadn't come. I said I had to go, but she told me she would definitely come and wouldn't stay long. I told her, 'I will send you money too.' When she arrived around midnight, she was already drunk; her head was in another world. I asked, 'Would you like something to drink?' She refused. She said she was hungry. It was clear that she had consumed something other than alcohol. I have never used drugs; I don't drink much alcohol either, but sometimes I use cocaine to wake up.
"I THREW HER INTO THE SEA TO AVOID GOING BACK TO PRISON" She received a phone call and talked for 10 minutes.

He insulted the person he was talking to. While talking on the phone, my daughter Hande came home with her friends. She got very angry when she saw Sedef. 'What do you have to do with a young girl, dad? You're bringing a girl who uses drugs home,' she said. Sedef and Hande got into a fight. I pulled Sedef away from them. When she went downstairs, I followed her. Then we bought alcohol and cola; she was putting something in the cola while drinking. When I woke up in the morning, she had passed away. I said Sedef, blood was dripping from her nose. To avoid going back to jail, I threw Sedef into the sea.
INTERIM DECISION FROM THE COURT The court decided to continue the detention of the two arrested defendants and postponed the hearing to address the missing issues.
