On September 20, 2024, in the rural Çokak neighborhood of Andırın, Melek G. and Seçil G. went to the shepherd Nail Yener, who was grazing animals, and asked him to buy them drinks. After receiving a negative response, Seçil G. assaulted Nail Yener. The incident, recorded by her sister Melek G. on her mobile phone, showed Seçil G. first slapping Yener and then starting to hit him with a stick.

"DON'T HIT HIM IF YOU LOVE GOD"

Nail Yener, whose head was bleeding from the blows he received, said, "Don't hit him if you love God." However, Seçil G. continued to hit Yener with the stick, telling her sister who was recording, "Look, his brain is bleeding. Look how the blood is coming from his brain, bring the camera closer. Yes friends, our brother Nail's head is bleeding, but it’s nothing." While Seçil G. continued to assault Nail Yener, sometimes singing and dancing, Melek G. directed her sister by saying, "Hit his legs." Following Nail Yener's complaint, Melek G. and Seçil G. were arrested.

As a result of the investigation, a case was opened against Melek G. for 'simple injury against a person who cannot defend themselves physically or mentally' and 'threatening with a weapon and public insult by multiple people' at the Andırın Criminal Court, with a request for a sentence of up to 11 years and 10 months for Melek G. and up to 7 years and 11 months for Seçil G., who was under 18 at the time of the incident.

"I WILL NEVER COMMIT SUCH A CRIME AGAIN"

The final hearing of the case was held. While the lawyers of the parties attended the hearing, the defendants Melek G. and Seçil G. were connected to the courtroom via the SEGBİS system from the prison where they were held.

"I REGRET WHAT I DID"

When asked for their final words in court, Seçil G. stated that she was repeating her defenses from previous hearings, saying, "I regret what I did very much. I will never commit such a crime again." Her sister Melek G. also stated in her defense that she would not commit such a crime again. The public prosecutor noted that in the footage, Seçil G. insulted Nail Yener, made threats, and assaulted him with a stick, which is considered a weapon, and that Melek G., who recorded these moments with her mobile phone, acted in concert with her sister from the very beginning, requesting the defendants to be punished.

THE COURT RENDERED ITS DECISION

At the end of the hearing, the judge sentenced Seçil G. to 1 year, 9 months, and 20 days in prison for injury and threatening with a weapon, and a judicial fine of 19,400 lira for insult. Melek G. was sentenced to 1 year, 3 months, and 37 days in prison and a judicial fine of 11,600 lira for the same offenses. The judge decided to suspend the announcement of the verdict and to release the defendants.
