According to the latest forecasts from the Meteorology, heavy snowfall is expected tomorrow in 55 provinces across the country. Experts indicate that January 12, Monday, should be a holiday, while the first holiday news came from Kahramanmaraş. However, there has not yet been an official statement regarding Istanbul and Ankara, which are under close watch.
The General Directorate of Meteorology issued a "heavy snowfall" warning for 55 cities. After the strong snowfall expected across the country, attention turned to whether schools would be closed. While a break in education is anticipated in many provinces of Turkey, the first holiday news came from Kahramanmaraş.
SNOW BLOCKADE ON EDUCATION IN KAHRAMANMARAŞ
In a statement from the Kahramanmaraş Governorship, it was noted that according to the latest assessments of the 6th Regional Directorate of Meteorology, adverse weather conditions are expected throughout the province on Sunday, January 11, and Monday, January 12. In this context, it was stated that rain, mixed rain and snow in places, and occasional snowfall are expected in the districts of Onikişubat, Dulkadiroğlu, and Türkoğlu, while mixed rain and heavy snowfall are expected in areas with an altitude of 800 meters and above, such as the Northern Ring Road, Tekir, Yedikuyular, Ahır Mountain, and its surroundings:
"It has been reported that heavy snowfall is expected throughout all other districts of our province on Sunday and Monday. Due to these adverse weather conditions, it is assessed that there may be disruptions in transportation, icing, freezing events, and blizzards. In this context, in order to ensure the safety of our students and citizens, it has been decided to suspend education and training for one day in all public and private educational institutions across our province. Pregnant and disabled personnel working in public institutions, mothers with children attending daycare or kindergarten, and personnel with chronic illnesses will be considered on administrative leave. The situation of personnel working in units providing health, security, and 24-hour services will be evaluated by the relevant units in accordance with the needs of the service. Our citizens are kindly requested to be careful and take precautions against the risks of icing, freezing, and blizzards."
ARE SCHOOLS CLOSED IN ISTANBUL?
After the heavy snowfall expected to start on January 12 (tomorrow) in Istanbul, attention turned to the announcement to be made by the Istanbul Governorship. No holiday announcement has yet been made for Istanbul by the governorship.
"IT WILL TURN INTO A WHITE CHAOS, SCHOOLS SHOULD BE CLOSED"
Meteorology Expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen also stated that schools should be closed on Monday. Şen said, "Monday will be cold and snow will also affect the west. Snow is coming to Istanbul on Monday. It would be beneficial for schools to be closed. There could be chaos. It will suddenly snow heavily. It will turn into a bit of a white chaos. If you have no work on Monday, try not to go outside. It will arrive in Istanbul on Sunday night, and it will be effective on Monday and Tuesday," he warned.
AKOM'S "HEAVY SNOWFALL" WARNING
AKOM announced that snowfall will begin in the megacity of Istanbul starting at 06:00 tomorrow morning. In a warning made by AKOM for today, it was stated, "While a rainy sky is expected throughout the day, it is predicted that from the night hours, the precipitation will be in the form of mixed rain and snow in high areas. It is expected that the precipitation will be effective as heavy snowfall in places throughout the province starting from the morning hours (06:00) tomorrow." Tomorrow, the maximum temperature is expected to be 3 degrees and the minimum 0 degrees, with precipitation amounts expected to be between 10-20 cm.
