According to the new law that will come into effect in Italy during the summer months, drivers who experience delays exceeding 10 minutes in traffic will have their highway tolls refunded by the government.

Italy is implementing a comprehensive refund system to compensate for traffic congestion caused by construction on highways. According to the regulation that will come into effect in the summer months, drivers will be entitled to a refund even if they experience only a 10-minute delay in addition to the normal duration of a 50-kilometer journey. However, the application will only be valid for traffic caused by maintenance and construction; accidents, adverse weather conditions, and road closures due to emergencies will be excluded.

IF THE DELAY IS 3 HOURS, THE FEE WILL BE FULLY REFUNDED

Partial or full refunds will be made depending on the duration of the delay. For longer distances, delays exceeding 15 minutes will grant drivers the right to compensation, while if the delay reaches three hours, the highway fee will be fully refunded.

APPLICATIONS THROUGH A MOBILE APP

Drivers will submit their applications through a special mobile application. The system is planned to operate similarly to the ticket refund model of the German Railways. While the aim is for the application to cover all highway operators, technical details are expected to be clarified.

The final say in determining the refund rates will belong to the highway operators, but the government will regulate the overall framework. How the system will be applied to foreign drivers will be clarified in the future.
