The Taliban administration organized a military parade on the third anniversary of their takeover of Afghanistan. The parade took place at Bagram, a former US base, and showcased motorcycle fighters and captured military vehicles. Diplomats from China and Iran also attended the ceremony, where Taliban forces displayed Soviet-made tanks and US-made armored vehicles. Additionally, motorcycles equipped with yellow barrels, which were previously used to carry homemade bombs, also participated in the parade. Taliban seized the capital on August 15, 2021, following the collapse of the US-backed government. The Taliban administration, which is not officially recognized by any country, is implementing policies that are described as "gender apartheid" by the UN, particularly targeting women. Human Rights Watch (HRW) called for pressure on the Taliban to lift restrictions on women. Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, warned the international community not to normalize the Taliban administration and its human rights violations. Taliban officials prioritize security and enforce laws based on a strict interpretation of Islam. However, ISIS attacks still pose a threat. As the economic downturn and humanitarian crisis continue, many Afghans report worsening living conditions. International civil society organizations emphasize that 23.7 million people in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance, while aid funds are decreasing.
