Emircan Yıldız, a 11th-grade student with Down syndrome studying at a Special Education Vocational School in Konya, was asked by his teacher to get up, indicating that the lesson had started, while he was eating on February 21.
HE PULLED HIS CHAIR WHEN HE DIDN'T GET UP
When Yıldız did not get up, his teacher Z.B. pulled the chair, causing Emircan to fall to the ground. The teacher tried to lift Yıldız from the ground for about 10 minutes and then walked away. Those moments were captured by security cameras. In the continuation of the footage, it was seen that Emircan Yıldız got up from the ground and left the cafeteria after a while.
THE FAMILY FILED A COMPLAINT
After the incident, Emircan Yıldız's family, who returned home from school, asked what had happened when they saw the scratches on their son's arm. When Yıldız said it was his teacher who did it, the family filed a complaint against the school and the teacher.
"I SAW BRUISES AND NAIL MARKS ON HIS ARM"
The family made a press statement with the Turkey Down Syndrome Association. Mother Fadime Yıldız said, "This is not the first time in schools, but we want it to be the last. As a mother, I am very sad. We want the violence to stop. We stand behind this to the end. When Emircan came home from school, I saw bruises and nail marks on his arm. When I asked who did it, he said, 'the teacher did it.' We immediately contacted the school. We watched the camera footage. It was clear that there was violence there. He pulled the chair from under him, kicked him, and repeatedly abused his arm. In fact, the nail marks are still there. We went and got a medical report and filed a complaint," she said.
"OUR RIGHT TO EDUCATION WAS TAKEN AWAY"
Mother Yıldız stated, "Education begins with love. My son does not want to go to school; he is afraid. He does not want to go because he fears that his teacher will apply violence to him again. Our right to education has been taken away. He did not go to school for 2 months. During this time, we did not receive any feedback from the school administration and teachers. Later, I went to school for a week to accompany him, but after this incident, he does not want to go to school at all. A front has also formed against us by the school administration," she expressed.
THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE INITIATED AN INVESTIGATION
After the incident, it was learned that the Konya Governor's Office initiated an administrative investigation and assigned 2 inspectors to investigate the matter.
