A group of men in Australia sparked outrage on social media by torturing a defenseless kangaroo. Footage of the incident was shared on Instagram in May. Animal rights organizations took action following the video and initiated legal proceedings. According to Australian laws, animal cruelty is a serious offense with severe penalties.
Inhumane torture inflicted on a vulnerable kangaroo in Australia has caused a huge uproar on social media. In the footage shared on social media, a group of men is seen kicking the kangaroo, throwing stones at it, and laughing while having fun.
The incident reportedly took place in the Northern Territory of Australia, and the footage was shared on Instagram in May. The videos show a man lifting the kangaroo by its arms and hitting its head against the metal of a parked car. In another moment, one person is seen kicking the animal's head while another steps on its tail.
Animal rights organizations sprang into action immediately after the video surfaced. An organization called "Aussies Against Animal Abuse" reported the video to the police and animal protection agencies, initiating legal proceedings. The organization made the following statement:
"Every day we see heartbreaking images, but this video was on a whole different level. It made us sick to our stomachs."
Reactions on social media also grew exponentially. One user stated,
"What has been done is disgusting; these individuals must be punished,"
they expressed.
According to Australian laws, mistreatment of animals is a serious crime. In the Northern Territory, the penalty for animal fighting, torturing, or injuring can be up to 2 years in prison or a fine of 37,000 dollars. If the animal is seriously injured or killed, this penalty can increase to up to 5 years in prison or a fine of up to 92,500 dollars.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Animal Welfare Unit of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
Unfortunately, such cases are not the first in Australia. Last April, a man was prosecuted for dragging a live kangaroo behind his car for about 400 meters. In another case, a 64-year-old man was found guilty of killing 71 kangaroos on his property and was fined 80,000 dollars.
It is emphasized that society needs to be more aware to prevent violence against animals in Australia. It has been reported that the legal process regarding the incident will be followed.
